Heavy set kid riding down Hwy 26 Sylvan Hill

"The Safest Part of the ride", you have to be Joking !!! I have also
ridden that route a few times when trying to get home quickly. The shoulder
is always full of debris (glass, sticks, big rocks etc) and drivers
generally don't expect to see a cyclist cruising down the shoulder of Hwy
26. Auto's exiting at the Goose Hollow often cross over the white fog line
(to the right) & take the shoulder to get to the exit early, especially when
traffic is stopped going into the tunnel (which is almost every day during
rush hour). This is definately not a "safe route", but technically it is a
legal route.

Huh, am i missing something ? Several times I rode from the Zoo exit down
26 to the goose hollow exit. It was , imo, the safest part of the ride !
wide shoulder, cars can't right hook me, And I am always to the right of any
exit and don't cross any, so no one will accidently get me from the left.
And typically i was going faster than the traffic anyway. Way safer than
trying to hurrriedly make my way through the zoo, on moss covered slippery
blind dark corners.

But yes I do agree, any road, if you swerve, or don't hold a line, it can
be dangerous.

Yeah. There is something to be said for being 'conscious'.

It is completely legal as long as you get off at the Goose Hollow exit. I used to work right at the Sylvan Hill exit. It is fun, but extremely dangerous, and it is trur that many cars don't know it's legal and frown upon it.
I do remember one time when they were working on the goose hollow exit ramp and it was intermitentaly closed. Well I rode down one day and the ramp was closed and I got in an argument with the flagger because if they close the ramp then they have to post no pedestrians the exit before so cyclist can detour through the zoo. Since I work as a land surveyor, I'm very familiar with major road construction sites. The flagger told me to turn around and go back up the hill. I told them that was illegal cus I would be riding against the flow of traffic. Finally the General Contractor came dowm and appologised to me and said that the signs were to be put up in the morning and he had to escort me through the work zone.
After that day I learned the route of the access road from sylvan hill to the zoo, and then I would cut down through washington park to get downtown.
Not as fun but a whole lot safer, not to mention that route has some pretty good hills with sharp turns.

That was me, sorry. But it's such a rush! Don't knock it before you try it.

It's legal and lots of skinny kids do it too.
