2011 PIECE OF CAKE ROAD RACE

What's with all the nervousness about a little gravel? Time to put the
handling skills you were honing in cyclocross to work.

My skinny 135lb "climber" ass was thinking of skipping PoC until I saw the
gravel road announcement. That got me excited to race it.

Watch some Spring Classics and get stoked!

I couldn't agree more! It'll be great. I'll be there with my 190 lb
flatlander best. I love the idea of the gravel and a flat race for once. Hit
the gravel with the hammer down, I say!

I think the gravel crtique comments were just an attempt at humor... but the
beer would be a good idea - I gotta keep up my weight.

For some of us all the climbing gets a little old. This race gives us flat
landers a chance to make the climbers suffer for once. I am super stoked
about this race and can't wait. We need more races with technical sections.
It weeds out the squirrels.

I was thinking this should be labeled a cyclocross race.
But a cross race has to be 90% rideable.
So, I guess it's still a road race.

It would be a good idea to have a first-aid station set up at the end of the gravel, with lots of clean water to wash gravel out of knees and elbows. Seriously.

Personally, I will wear arm warmers and knee warmers just-in-case.

That 3.572345 miles of awesomeness is going to be the coolest part of the
race! Too bad there's not more of it.

It's just gravel! You can ride up and down Saltzman (also gravel) and you
will see it's no big deal.

Enjoy!

Actually on soft surfaces speed assists in stability. Wheels
generate more gyroscopic

stability, a body in motion tends to remain in motion, you
will be planing across the surface instead of wallowing.

One, it's completely impossible.
Two, it's possible, but it's not worth doing.
Three, I said it was a good idea all along.

Wow!  A gravel section.

Sounds like a "day in the life" at a mountain

bike race (before you get to the single-track!).   We
have to fix our own flats, no cars following us.  I sure hope
you folks get through that gravel ok.  It seems you have the
two options.  go slow and cautious or fast and take lots of
chances.

Also have some fun!  Piece of cake right?

Long, Steve

Seriously, have none of you people done the Eugene Roubaix? Come on,
it's a road race with a gravel section.

Has nobody seen last year's Tour where they had to ride a wet clay
section? It looked like they'd done a cross race but guess what, this is
a road race. J

Cheers

Please excuse the promoter for wanting to make a RR fun and challenging. For some of us all the climbing gets a little old. This race gives us flat landers a chance to make the climbers suffer for once. I am super stoked about this race and can't wait. We need more races with technical sections. It weeds out the squirrels.

Wow! A gravel section.
Sounds like a "day in the life" at a mountain bike race (before you get to the single-track!). We have to fix our own flats, no cars following us. I sure hope you folks get through that gravel ok. It seems you have the two options. go slow and cautious or fast and take lots of chances.
Also have some fun! Piece of cake right?

Really Seriously?? Is there busted glass and cactus and police spikes and Rattlesnakes and jagged cliffs and railroad tracks and cattle crossings and hot lava too?

It's just a gravel road for goodness sake.

I was thinking of Keirin armor, ala Brian Abers. :^)

It would be a good idea to have a first-aid station set up at the end of the
gravel, with lots of clean water to wash gravel out of knees and elbows.
Seriously.

Personally, I will wear arm warmers and knee warmers just-in-case.

Google Maps Street View has it at 3.6 miles. Great place to line up as a spectator ;-) ....or to set up an extra Wheel Pit.
Should be an action-packed day! Good luck to us all!

Just a note: I rode the Piece of Cake course yesterday.

My Garmin showed 3.5 miles of gravel. Nearly all of it is loose/packed
gravel, quite slippery at speeds. Some places have a hardpack dirt base with
a little scattered crushed gravel on top in the two car tire-tracks, and
these are the spots at greatest risk for flats because some of the gravel
chunks are large and sharp. I did not see any potholes or washboard.

I'd agree about having tough tires, wide tires, maybe even your cross bike.
Also, keep lots of space between you and other riders. There's lots of
sudden slipping and swerving when you hit the deeper gravel pockets.

I've received a few email messages inquiring about the gravel section of this year's POC circuit. Indeed, there are 2 miles of gravel per 17.4 mile lap. It's a good road as far as gravel roads go... though I have not ridden it since the big rains we had recently.

I think of it as pretty similar to the surfaces you might have seen from photos of the Strade Bianche. But in our case, it's more like "Strade Grigio" and it's flat. The tarmac sections are in excellent condition.

Still, I do not recommend riding lightweight wheels and tires on this course.

Next week I'll do another recon and will post some observations and photos to the forum. We'll have a crew on course the weekend prior to the race to sweep and attempt to mitigate any significant issues we can.

The 2011 edition of the Piece of Cake Road Race is set for Saturday, March 26. This year’s event is the second race of the Oregon Cup.

History:
The Piece of Cake Race was founded by David Auker in 1975. Over the years it has been held in various locations in the Willamette Valley before moving to a location north of Vancouver for a short time. Last year POC returned to its roots with a new course south of Amity, near the community of Perrydale. POC courses have always been flat, fast and windswept.

Another hallmark of POC has been its prizes of cakes – a tradition that was begun by David and Sarah Auker. The 2011 POC will continue this tradition, sans the magical talents of Sarah.

The course:
This year’s course follows many of the same roads as last year. But now the route has been lengthened into a 17.4 mile clockwise loop that includes 2+ miles of gravel road. It’s mostly flat, with a few gently rolling hills. Sturdy tires and wheels are advised.

Start is located at Perrydale School (they are kindly allowing us to use their parking lot) at 7445 Southwest Perrydale Road, Amity, OR 97101-9725. Space is VERY limited. Please do all you can to carpool your way to the race.

Behavior notes:
Getting permits to run a bicycle race in a rural community is no small feat... not to mention obtaining event permits from two counties and ODOT. Please model exceptional OBRA Citizen behavior so we will be invited back next year. No alcohol is permitted. Toilet facilities will be supplied. We will be offering the same bounty on public urination as did the Cherry Pie promoters: photograph and identify a violator and receive free entry to this event. Please pack out your own trash: do not litter anywhere on the course or start area. Leave no trace.

View a map of the course here: http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/or/perrydale/436127872080247628

Due to permit restrictions there will be field limits. Most fields will be limited to 50 riders except Cat 1,2,3s which will be limited to 75, and Jr 13/15 which will be limited to 25. There will be no Jr 10-12 field this year.

More information will be posted and on-line registration will be open later this week.
