Thanks Tom, Russ, John, Derl, Troy, et al, for the updated info on Saltzman

Rd. I did it yesterday on Michelin Axial Carbon 700x23 with no problem.

Gearing: 42x18 fixed. Very nice climb, looked like about 3+ miles, 1000 ft

elevation gain, not very steep. It's packed gravel/dirt after the gate, but

not much that impacts skinny tires, as the gravel is pea-sized, about like

on park trails.



Bright colors are a good idea, as downhill mtb's can be encountered, and

being seen quickly could be beneficial to your health...:-)



Saltzman Rd: bottom: off Hwy 30, between Portland and St John's Bridge.

top: about one mile N. of Thompson.



Nice! Almost entirely w/in Forest Park, no motor vehicles.

Was on Saltzman up above Leif Erikson last week on a cyclocross bike with 28C road tires and it seemed as smooth as a gravel road can get.



Also, for a steep unpaved no traffic climb try Holman Lane. It starts at the Wildwood trail access at NW Aspen (via Thurman) and finishes on NW 53rd between Cornell and Thompson. I have only found it rideable going uphill during dry conditions.

skinny road tires to big, chunky mtb stuff. (Once in a while, they

"improve" the road by grading it with monster gravel.)



Anyone been up there recently? Is it appropriate for a road bike?

Yes, it is appropriate for a road bike, going up. I go up it occasionally as a long cut home, then go down Germantown. I would say, though, that it is pretty much all gravel (keep seated gravel) once you go through the gate, about mile in from hwy 30.    



Also, FYI, if you looking for another car free road, Newberry Road intersecting Hwy 30 is currently under construction and cars can't get through, but bikes can. (Newberry road is a couple miles north of St John's bridge this side of Sauvie Island, where the construction is)
