Does anyone have prior experience traveling with road bikes to Italy (flying in/out of Rome)?

Any opinions on or experiences with bike boxes/bags? Suggestions for the packing/protection of the bike?

What to do with the box once in Italy other than lugging it around?

I'm flying with KLM/Delta and hope Delta uses KLM's fee schedule for bikes as sporting equipment, counting it as a checked bag ($50 for extra bag on KLM vs. $200 for bike on Delta)
