Rain jackets and visible numbers

In Adventure Racing, we're required to wear the race number outside
our clothing layers (duh, right?). But we often transition between
many different disciplines, and may race for many days in a row.
Including having to wear it outside of our PFD (life jacket) on
paddling legs of the race. Switching race numbers to different layers
of clothing is a pain in the ... backside. To get around that, some
teams pin their race number to their backpack. Not helpful here in
this case. Some teams (I've done this before), would have a very
lightweight mesh tank top, which you attach your race number to. It's
easy to take on/off, and pull over the top of a rain jacket.

Here's an example of what I mean:

I can't find the one I have, which is super super lightweight and
stretchy, and includes two pockets in back like a bike jersey. But
you get the idea ...

Or order extra numbers but same result either way...  pin both jacket and jersey.  Vests work great in rainy conditions to at least keep your core warm.  Embrocation adds another layer to repel some of the water and keep your muscles warm (be careful how you apply).  A warm base layer works wonders as well.  For feet, I sometimes slip my feet through bags in which newspapers get delivered and just cut off the top at the shoe cuff.  This sometimes helps keep some warmth but your feet will still get wet.

Final tip would be think about what you wear when you go training (assuming you train in the rain) and base your decision on that.  Keep in mind that, due to effort, you will be running a little hotter in a race so may not need as think a layer or as many layers.  And know that in some races, you will just flat out be miserable.  Enjoy the ride.

Hello Donald,

I suggest keeping the same number annually so that you have two sets of numbers.  That way you can wear numbers on both layers.  Lesson learned.

After all the hub-ub this weekend about visible race numbers I'm wondering how to go about this in the future. I'm sure the best solution is to simply remove your jacket before the finish, but in the chaos of the last lap, sometimes this isn't your top priority. To avoid this issue, I skipped the jacket and went with some warmers and layered jerseys. That being said, I was freezing on the last lap of BB#3 and wished I had a better shell.   My questions are:

Are clear rain jackets OBRA approved?

Any advice to newer racers about how to dress for the rain?

Cheers,

Matt

anyone could buy extra numbers and then pin them on both outer layer and inner
layer.

that way regardless of sartorial choice there is an external number visible upon
completion of athletic endeavor.
