Re: Route to Hood River I-84 stretch

I'll add my $0.02 as well. I've ridden the below described route several times
in the last year. The stretch along I-84 has buttery smooth new pavement and
nice W I D E shoulders, I say more like 8 ft in most places rather than 3-4 ft.
The Mosier Twin Tunnel section of Old Hwy 30 East of Hood River is a treat and
now closed to cars so no issues with vehicles there, but especially on warm
summer days expect to see lots of folks out for a stroll or leisurely bike ride.
>From Mosier on Eastward vehicles again, but as is the rule on old Hwy 30, no
grade over 5% as you climb Rowena Crest.

enjoy the ride!

OK, just my $0.02

They have recently, last year or so finished construction on the
bridges of I-84. Before construction the shoulder was narrow in
sections. During construction the shoulder was completely inadequate.
Now it is mostly awesome, 3-4 feet, comparable to highway 30 between
Portland and Sauvie island.

There are still a couple narrow bridges just west of Hood River, check
behind you and wait for a gap in traffic if possible, but in daytime
they're really not too bad.

Take the first exit into Hood River and ride on the section of old
highway 30, it has a bike lane and restaurants etc.

I've always enjoyed the old highway bike path into Cascade Locks
versus the tunnel. If you're wearing road shoes be aware there's a
section of staircase :-)

And, if you're in Hood River and want to ride to the Dalles, you can
take the historic highway multi-use path to Mosier (including some
neat old tunnels), and Highway 30 to the Dalles via Rowena Crest, with
no freeway whatsoever.

I am wondering about the Wyeth Road I did the load from NE Portland to
HR & then over Mt Hood. I avoided the tunnel & thought the really dicey
part was going E on I-84 around Shellrock Mtn. There wasn't a shoulder
just the concrete dividers on the right up to the rock wall it just
inches between those & the rumble strip on the inside of the white fog
line. It was really crazy intense. Worried if I'd make it alive. I
wasn't aware of that ahead of time or of Wyeth Road. I was told later
recounting that there isn't any other option except I-84.
I like the idea of going east 1st & then oup & over Mt Hood but never
again unless there was another option or I wanted to tempt fate.

Ride the Scenic Highway until after Dodson, as far as you can, then a brief stretch on I-84

- Ride the surface roads through Cascade Locks and on to Frontage
Road to the south of I-84

- Turn on Wyeth Road and go over a large and steep hill

- Get back on I-84 for a brief bit to Hood River

The parts on the I-84 shoulder are pretty short. The only really dicey bit there is riding through the tunnel just before Cascade Locks which is not so bad as it is short and downhill. You can also get off at Eagle Creek and ride a bike path into Cascade Locks.
