Press Release: K2 and Widmer Brothers to Sponsor Star-Crossed Cyclocross
Date: August 30, 2002
K2 and Widmer Brothers Brewing have agreed to co-title sponsor
Star-Crossed Cyclocross at the Marymoor Park in Redmond, WA on September
28th. Star-Crossed will be a new and unique event on the United States
bicycle racing calendar for 2002, the nations first twilight cyclocross
race (see race description below). The event will kick of the 2002
cyclocross season in style under the lights at the Marymoor Velodrome on a
fast and spectator friendly course surrounded by a festive atmosphere. Race
festivities will feature the Widmer Brothers Beer Garden, free raffles for
spectators and a DJ pumping out tunes while the crowd sees the entire race
unfold in front of them on the challenging floodlight lit course. K2 will be
offering a top-of-the-line Enemy cyclocross frame during the raffle. Races
for beginning and intermediate riders start the day at 4:30 PM with the
headlining Senior Mens race at 7:30 PM. The Senior Mens race will feature
Northwest cyclocross superstars Dale Knapp of Kona/Voicestream and Jonny
Sundt of K2 Bikes.
What is Cyclocross?
Cyclocross is roughly the equivalent of Steeplechase running for
bicyclists. The sport, which originated in Europe more than 75 years ago,
was intended as off season (Oct.-Jan.) training for road riders. Riders
practiced on forest trails, parks, and soccer fields, etc. This often meant
crossing streams, climbing over fallen trees and carrying their bikes
through sections that cannot be ridden. Today it is a full blown cycling
discipline with a devoted following of racers and spectators.
The typical 'cross course consists of a 1 to 2 mile loop of varied
terrain, including dirt, pavement, steep run ups and off camber turns.
Natural and artificial barriers are often used to force the riders to
dismount and remount their bicycles at speed. The races are timed events
which last between 30 and 60 minutes each, depending on the riders' age
and/or ability level.
