So true Mike. I know that many of you here don't consider Ultra Cycling events
racing either. It's a different sort of animal for sure. But the 2010 Furnace
Creek 508 was won by a guy (Chris "RAM" Ragsdale) on a "classic" bike. ie:
lugged steel frame, 8spd, friction shifters, nothing on the bike that did not
exist in (I think) 1980. He competed against guys in aero helmets, disc wheels,
aero tested carbon frames, ceramic bearings, aerobars, indexed shifting, the
whole ball of wax. Yes indeed, a win comes from a little bit of luck, a lot of
training, and a STRONG engine!
Race on dudes! (and dudettes!!)

I disagree strongly. There is not much return for investment in a TT bike after
you put on TT bars and aero wheels. Actually really only the front wheel is
significant. This hardly qualifies as "gobs of cash". It is very possible to win
TTs on a cheap bike. Bikes can lose races but they never win races. The idea
that you can drastically improve performance with equipment alone is marketing
hype.
