We have a swingdaddy on our Sube and a Thule roof rack on a Golf. We like them both for different reasons. The Swingdaddy holds 4 bikes and all wheels, leaves factory roof rails free for a space case, and keeps the bikes in a more aero place. But, it can’t hold a canoe like the Thule rails can.
Based on a recommendation from an OBRA-ite, we did have a place in Salem (Metal Fab) weld a 2” hitch onto the Outback, since the factory one is 1.25” and I wasn’t optimistic about the strength of the racks compatible with that.

Lots of hitch rack fans ... With good reason. If you have something with a hitch, hitch racks rule. Clean, safe, easy. My favorite, also local, is made by Softride (not the bike company as far as I know). I borrowed one, loved the way it lowered down without taking the bikes off to get in the back of the truck. When I can't steal the wife's truck, I have a collection of Yakima rooftop racks for every purpose.

I will be needing a new rack system at some point in the future. Do I go with a roof mount of a rear hitch mount?
