Richard Sweet

The sign get's new bike stickers about every other year and then someone

takes them down again. The trail is open to mountain bikes from top to

bottom. Unfortunately with the tags torn off some hikers will hassle

mountain bikers, especially when they are acting like cowboy's.



You can call Steve Otupoluk (spell?) at the McKenzie River ranger

district, he is the recreation manager.

Where was this marked at? I've been riding that trail

for years and have never noted a 'closed' sign, other

then some seasonal closures due to wildlife, and those

always had alternate routes. Usually, the number of

bikers far outnumbers the hikers on that trail, and

since its such a crown jewel, I can't believe a

section was able to be closed without notice and

uproar from the mtb groups.

It is common for opposing trail user to deface the trailhead signs and

remove the icons for the users they do not like. Unfortunatly it does cause

unneeded confrontations.



Maybe the "tickets" being given out were for not yeilding to hikers.

If I'm not mistaken, the trail down past the falls on the East (highway)

side of the river is open only to hiking, while the trail on the far side of

the river is open to mountain bikes. You have to cross over the river on a

log bridge.
