Canby Ferry

What Mike said. It's not "fair" but it's totally worth $2. Of all the injustices in my life this one rates pretty low.

I also think the co. sees that it might be bikes that are keeping the ferry afloat (ha ha), and that it's worth more to me when I'm on a bike vs. in a car ("$4! I'll just drive back to the freeway. Only costs me 20min.")

I've ridden the Canby ferry dozens(?) of times on the "Two Ferries" DIY century (with Wheatland) or down to Mt. Angel or other rides in hops country. This is usually warm weekend afternoons, and in such situations bikes might outnumber cars. I've been on it a few times when the *only* traffic was bikes. On one such trip I asked the operator if this happens a lot and he said something like "I've made 15 trips today and collected $10."

All those who think it is out of line to pay $2 to ride across a river on a ferry, maintained and run year around, save your breath and go around. It is amazing that folks think it is cool to ride the ferry but expect that the experience should be given to them free.

There, riders race for glory alone, which is bolstered by an incredible event atmosphere, among other things. It?s not the size of this event, but that fact that everything about it makes racers feel like they walk on water. Spectators are somehow made to believe the racers are superstars! The race is located hours outside population centers. It has scheduling conflicts with other races. The course is so selective half the field is pulled. It?s always super hot and on a holiday. My point is that travel, schedule, course type, category break-downs and prize money are all secondary concerns. The biggest factor is how highly the event is regarded by our peers and the public. Spectators are critical. Field size helps. Unique, fun, fast or difficult courses help. Podiums help. Photos help. Race reports help. Announcers help. Music helps. Call-up

I have to say that the Portland Twilight Criterium last week captured that feeling to a degree. If some people think that the OBRA criteriums were less than championship quality, perhaps it was because the real championship?the race for glory in the eyes of the public and our peers--took place the night before? Thanks.

> I've got a set of 2010 (?) Campy Centaur 10sp. shifters that I'm looking to (preferably) trade for a set of whatever SRAM levers you have laying around. These were used on a B cross bike before I bought them from a good guy on this list, then I used the right hand lever for one cross season, and the left for a few early season road/rain rides. Both levers are in great condition, the right lever has only a couple minor scratches in the clear coat, as you can see in the attached photos. I also have a cool Shiftmate cable pull adjuster thing, so you can run these levers with a Shimano rear derailluer. Let me know what you have, or if you've got any questions.

They do that in Canada! Just another regulation in the way of profit, or something that helps innocent people not be impacted by money making ventures. Pass the cost on to the end consumer and save lives. I do not want to breath coal dust and think the 4 year old living across the street from me should not deal with that either.

Thanks.

Maybe two free pedestrian trips is all it would take to get your bike across without charge.

I agree, though I've never been to Canby...

The economics of this thing probably don't work the way some people
seem to think they should. It doesn't immediately follow that a bike
should cost a lot less than a car, somehow proportional to the
difference in size or weight:

There may be built-in costs for the ferry operator that scale linearly
with the size of the person and vehicle being transported - space
consumed, *maybe* fuel cost - but there are certainly plenty of costs
that don't scale exactly like that, such as the costs associated with
reservation and payment transaction (ferry conductor costs), insurance
of those onboard, costs of marketing, printing schedules, etc. These
services are consumed in mostly the same way by either pedestrian or
car-having dude.

Anyway, a $2 ferry sounds fun. I think I'll ride to Canby.

I was in on the survey. I said I'd be glad to pay 2 bucks to get me and my
bike across the river and keep the ferry operating. Not much else I can
think of where $2 brings that much happiness, and it sure beats turning
around - it's a good deal.

$2 to go across the river with your bike is fair. In fact it would be a
good thing for many, many cyclists to make a point of riding a route which
takes the Ferry and support the program. No real reason we should get a
free ride. Lets just pay to help it continue.

They did a survey 6 months or so ago. They asked what solutions people were
willing to
choose to ensure the ferry would continue to operate or if it should close.
It seemed from
the media at the time that the ferry normally operates at a loss and there
were questions why
it should be supported if it looses money.

People responded saying the ferry was worth $2 by bike and keeping the ferry
was good for
tourist and other reasons.

I dont remember all the details.

They did a survey 6 months or so ago. They asked what solutions people were willing to
choose to ensure the ferry would continue to operate or if it should close. It seemed from
the media at the time that the ferry normally operates at a loss and there were questions why
it should be supported if it looses money.

People responded saying the ferry was worth $2 by bike and keeping the ferry was good for
tourist and other reasons.

I dont remember all the details.

I figure that the next time I lead a group ride out that way I'll just drive my pickup to the ferry and fill it up with 5 bikes and riders. (4 + me, jump seats work for this short distance!) Have each rider kick in a buck. The cyclists get 50% off, I will make as many trips back and forth as necessary then park my pickup and join the ride.

The Canby Ferry at least also charges pedestrians. The other two upstream ferries charge bikes a buck, but do not charge pedestrians. I wonder just how much of a bike you'd have to carry before they call it a bike and charge you for it? Wheels? Frame? Maybe two free pedestrian trips is all it would take to get your bike across without charge.

I'm not against cyclists paying a fare share. Base the fee on weight, or space taken, I'm good with that.

Seems like a buck would be more than enough considering how much space we
take up. When I hopped on he took me, just by myself, across. I would have
been happy to wait a few minutes to save the energy usage.

Not that $2 is a huge cost, but if I can ride around Portland for free or
pay $2 to ride around Canby, you know which one will be my first choice.

ya, $2 for a bike or pedestrian. $4 for a car. $24 if you have something big and take the whole ferry. Doesn't seem equitable to me.

Thought I would pass this on to anybody that does the Canby loop route once
in awhile. Me and a buddy tried to do it yesterday afternoon, riding 20
miles to get there and finding out it's closed, when it should have been
open. So call ahead whenever you go that way, because finding out it's
closed will just leave you backtracking about 30 miles from Portland, which
isn't the most exciting route in my opinion.
