If you care about riding at Powell Butte, please do something to preserve it. Many of us are upset about how *most* of the trails are being closed to bikes. Plus they city is looking to violate its beautiful meadows with a water treatment plant. So, here is what you can do:
Go to the message board above the parking lot on the east end (yes, its the opposite end as the Springwater Corridor bike path entrance).
Bring a pen and fill out the survey about how you used the park. Share your opinion on the trail system and recent closures to bikes. Remember, it's pretty much the only singletrack within Portland and mtn bikes are losing access (ironically b/c there are more of us using the park, but mostly b/c we have not done enough to voice our concerns).
And there is another form to grab to mail a letter to the City asking them not to build the water treatment facility and tower at Powell Butte. There is another site that is outside the urban growth boundary that would work quite well. Let's not have them spoil the only park of its kind within the city when viable alternatives exist. Powell is a little oasis: lets keep it that way.
Another way to help is to attend the monthly "Friends of Powell Butte Meeting". I believe this months meeting is on the 19th. It is primarily attended by hikers/horseback riders. Mountain bikers are under-represented. This group makes recommendations to the city and its views are considered legitimate. All too often mtn bikers do not speak out and instead "protest" by riding the closed trails anyway. This damages our credibility.
And finally. Go enjoy Powell: blackberries are in season. mmmmmmmm.
