I've had luck with explaining that the box contains bicycle PARTS. I figure

that's not lying, and it seems to somehow be different than a box that

actually contains a bicycle.

The best way to get around the bike fee is to first, fly United and use the

bike vouchers from the USCF. If you aren't flying United getting by free is

a little bit more difficult:

1- Get good at lying and tell them its a business display and that you are

flying to a convention. This is a pretty good excuse. This might not work if

I have heard that there may be a new bike coming onto the market which will end the problem of flying with a bike. Mikkel may get to test race it. It will have 650c wheels and be able to be broken down and flown in a larger suitcase--no extra bike fee. After Mikkel's less than nice experience both with flying with a bike and shipping a bike this sounds like a really good option. I will keep you posted as we learn more.

I just got back from a conference in Minneapolis last week and took my bike.

Rented a hard bike case from Hutches in Bend ($25/week) and flew out of

Redmond on United using their USA Cycling bike vouchers. Everything worked

fine. Note, don't overload the case with extra stuff, because they do weigh

it at the counter (70 lbs max.), and if it's over weight they will charge

you. And if you rent a car, make sure the case will fit in it. I got a new

Honda Accord for a couple of days to go to Lake Superior that worked fine

I can attest to UPS roughriding your bike. I've sent my bike once and a

friend twice. Each time there was minor to major damage even though they

were packed in Tri-ALL 3 bike cases. Be careful whatever you decide.

Be very careful about shipping UPS. I have heard horror stories from a guy

named Dave that is a driver for UPS and bikes and this is NOT a very good

idea according to him. But if you do, let us know your success.

I flew America West and was told that there is no charge for bikes

properly packed. You must tell the reversation agent to note it in the

flight record when the reservation is made. I was amazed. I think they

are actually trying to win back customers.
