Scappoose trail update!

People who ride this area see below for latest information.
I have to say the people working hard in Northwest Trail Alliance (NWTA) continue to impress me. They are not about stroking their own ego, but about working to get us places to ride and in a manner that gains respect from land managers (their professional approach is gaining that respect big time).
They have just taken possession of a mechanized trail building machine that will have a huge impact on trail building in the region. They (this weekend) will begin training operators and this machine will be available for use by other groups, agencies to expedite trail building in the area. NWTA is working with other mtb groups to help us have trail to ride around Oregon and SW Washington. Please..........even if you have no desire to volunteer building trail........consider becoming a member. You will also get membership to IMBA and make our voice that much stronger. Get those you know to become members.
An example of them working with other groups and agencies is (as M. Manning mentioned on earlier post) the new State Park at Stub Stewart near Vernonia as well as, Sandy Ridge, Black Rock, Tillamook Forest trails, Mt. St. Helens, and other SW WA areas. The three that just blow my mind right now are the rebuild of the BMX track area in Beaverton (work this weekend if you have some time), trying to work with the loose group of riders who build in the Hood River area to construct more sustainable trail (work day there on the Post Canyon area weekend of 11th) and Scappoose area.

Scappoose: June 2011 update. Thanks for your continued cooperation and patience!

Thanks everyone for your patience while the south side trails @ Scappoose (aka Rocky Point Road) have been closed! As noted earlier, this is an actively logged timberland, and thus, we will encounter periodic closures. Please note that some access on the south side is still closed-- observe signs prohibiting entry and stay out of the active areas (clearcut).

Longview Timberlands (LT) is also appreciative of our self-policing regarding the closure. Our efforts have been noticed and help to continue to build our relationship with LT. They are still reviewing our draft agreement regarding the trails, our ongoing usage of the land and trail maintenance, and we hope to have something to share. However, these things take time and we appreciate your patience as we continue to work through this process.

Special thanks to our Trail Steward for Scappoose, Andy Jansky, who has worked hard to move our efforts forward with Longview Timberlands.

If you have any concerns regarding Scappoose trails, Andy can contacted via the "Trail Stewards" page (Rocky Point Road, last line).

Status of the Scappoose trails as of May 31, 2011:

North side: Trails open.

South side: Closures still exist, logging operations are still active. Currently, logging road repair work is ongoing and removal of timber will continue for a while. Please respect the closures and refrain from any trail construction.

Thanks,

Tom Slovak
