GF looking looking to buy MTB, wants female salesperson

Forest,
You have received alot of good information regarding this upcoming experience. Some very good shops and people mentioned. My only comment to you would be to just "walk away" from anyone who you feel is not taking the time "you and your friend" feel is needed or not being honest. There are some very caring people working in the bike shops mentioned (and there are other good shops and people). You are shopping at a time when owners and employees want to help you get the right bike and fit more than ever. They know that doing the right thing for you is not only the best business practice, but the best advertising. Thirty years ago, the environment was not the same. Just remember you have options and don't hurry. Save the hurrying for the races! The bike shops that base their practices on customer needs are the ones that endure and will be around to help you and your girlfriend in the future. When you need that upgrade!

My girlfriend wants to buy and be fitted for a mountain bike. She also wants to work with female sales staff, if at all possible. We are in Eugene, but would be happy to go to PDX, Bend, ect., if neccesary to find a shop she is comfortable with. Does anyone have any shops that might fit her bill? I would also take suggestions for non-threatening men with experience fitting women too!

I would second the fellas at Sellwood. My wife was a first time bike buyer when
we went there, and it was a great experience for her. They won't sell you
something that doesn't work, and will actually listen. Their new shop is also
MUCH better for looking at their assortment of bikes.
Cheers!
Brian

Hey Forest-

Lots of options.

First would suggest to have her talk to folks like:

Tori Bortman
Ladies from Sorella or Ladies Auxiliary

I'd bet they would have have some great suggestions.

Russell and Molly are awesome too.

She's not getting a frickin' heart transplant. She's buying a bike from someone her own size, with similar physiology, and who presumably has personal experience with women-specific gear. I don't think this is some sort of reverse sexism, dudes.

My wife recommends the ladies at Woodstock Bike Gallery in particular, though I don't think that store has the biggest selection of MTB.

Seriously. But like I said, Portland is much better then many areas. I lived in CA for a while and had plenty of experiences there that bordered on comical. As in, why are you running a business?!

My point was that it definitely happens and it definitely happens more to women.

Seriously?

I have never experienced that except for one shop, whose name will
remain, well-unnamed.

Try Sellwood Cycle Repair (on 13th & Miller in Sellwood), they are a
great bunch there and I seriously doubt you'd find any kind of bad
attitude with them. They kind of specialize in cross and mtb biking
sooo....

Are you kidding me?! I can't even count the number of times I've been
in shops where I got the "please put your nutsack on the table" vibe
from shop folk, as if I needed to demonstrate my cycling credentials
before being given the time of day.

It's even worse for women. Trust me, I know because shopping for an MTB
with my wife was uncomfortable until we found folks who made it a great
experience (Passion Trail Bikes in CA).

It's not that bad everywhere, and shops in Portland are way better then
most, but cycling is still definitely working out it's Boy's Club issues
and shopping for a bike can be a lousy experience because of it.

My girlfriend wants to buy and be fitted for a mountain bike. She also wants
to work with female sales staff, if at all possible. We are in Eugene, but
would be happy to go to PDX, Bend, ect., if neccesary to find a shop she is
comfortable with. Does anyone have any shops that might fit her bill? I
would also take suggestions for non-threatening men with experience fitting
women too!
