2011 Weekly Track Racing in Victoria, BC!
Hello GVVA supporters,
I'm happy to announce the beginning of our 2011 Track Racing Season on the Commonwealth Games Legacy Velodrome!
Our Weekly Race Nights this year will be Monday and Friday nights, beginning at 6:30pm. (Thursday has been moved to Friday. We may have an Open Track on Thursdays.)
Monday will remain timed events and sprints, and will usually alternate with 200m and Matched Sprints one night, and Pursuits and Kilo's the other.
Friday nights will be our Bunch Races, and will be a rotating schedule similar to before, featuring 2-3 races for each category (A, B & C), typically Miss'n'Out, Scratch and Points races, but also a likely Keirin night, and other race formats. A full schedule is forthcoming.
There will ALSO be new, regularly scheduled periods of open track for training purposes, some structured as well! More details on this to come.
This week however, on Monday, June 13th and Friday, June 17th we'll ease into riding and racing the track, with more fun-oriented events while we all get our track legs and heads back.
Events will begin at 6:30pm, and the track will be open for riding and warm-ups after 5pm (until 6:30pm). Bring a few extra layers, it can cool down once the sun dips. Also, you may wish to bring a folding chair.
COSTS & REQUIREMENTS
We will need to collect membership fees, and ensure all have CyclingBC licenses (Citizen or UCI.) You can sign-up on location. The forms are posted online here:http://www.gvva.bc.ca/#files - please print off and fill out both the 2011 Membership Form, and the Waiver. (Again: 2011 Membership Form will be posted shortly, and will be different from the current 2008 forms.)
All must become annual members of the GVVA organization ($10, $5 for Juniors, free for Cadets).
You can pay drop-in fees, but we encourage our Riding & Training option for $100 ($50 for Juniors, free for Cadets), which gets you into all our regular weekly racing and training programs (exeception: Friday Under the Lights races, Provincial Championships, and a few other 'special' events.)
Also, all must have an annual CyclingBC license - this will be $46 if you get it from us (but also allows you to enter other local cycling races, like the Victoria Cycling League weekly races, and the Sidney Velo time trial series.) If you already have a Citizen or UCI license for the road, you are good to go. (You may need the $10 'add-on' if you have only Mountain Biking.)
If you wish to store your bike in our secure Club House, you may for $20, which gets you a hook and a little space underneath. Hook # selection will be first-come, first-served.
Finally, all NEW riders to the velodrome must first take two courses - our Learn to Ride and Learn to Race sessions, which will be offered regularly (and announced to the list, and listed on our website.) If you've ridden our track before, you should be good to go. If you've ridden elsewhere, but not here, we may give you a quick track etiquette quiz. If you've not ridden the track at all before, you will likely be required to take our sessions. (NB: regular and experienced road riders whom our clinic instructors are familiar with and deemed familiar with track racing MAY be allowed to join our programs with a brief introduction on a case-by-case situation, although we encourage all to take both our LTR sessions regardless of experience.)
BIKE RENTALS
Yes, we do have a fleet of rental bikes! They are currently $5 to rent per session (and can be pro-rated for the season if you'll be renting regularly). We have a number of sizes to accomodate nearly all riders, although gear selection is limited. It's first-come-first serve in most cases, so show up early for the best option for you.
This is a lot of information to absorb, please re-read this a few times if necessary, and feel free to contact me for specifics.
See you Monday night!!
PS - volunteers are always welcome. We could use help signing people up, flipping the lap counter, scoring, etc.. Bring friends and family members!

KEEP YOUR RACE SCHEDULE FILLED IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO UPGRADE
All track upgrades are processed and approved by USA Cycling and the SCNCA
with recommendations from velodrome managers using the following criteria:
http://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=2626
Track Categorization Guidelines - Upgrades
Rider upgrades are handled electronically. You can request an upgrade online through your USAC account. The request will be sent to the person responsible for your area and/or category. You will need to follow the instructions online and provide the information about your race experience and placings. The information you provide must include the race date, name, type of event, category, number of participants, and placing. If the administrator approves the upgrade, your account will be changed so that when you request a new license, the category will be changed. For road, track, and cyclocross category changes, local Association representatives will also provide stickers for your license if you are not requesting a new one. Note that road, track, and cyclocross category 1 and mountain bike Semi-Pro and Pro upgrades require a license reissue. A mountain bike Pro license must be an international license.
Click https://www.usacycling.org/myusac/index.php?pagename=mypage to Login Now
All track upgrades and downgrades are made through the local association.
Please DO NOT send your license. Contact your Regional Coordinator via phone or email with questions or circumstances not addressed in the rulebook.
Track Upgrades
Track upgrades and downgrades are made through the Local Associations and Regional Coordinators. Only results from a USA Cycling permitted event may be considered for an upgrade. All track upgrades are processed using the following criteria:
Cat. 5 to Cat. 4 Complete a Velodrome Class or 4 race days.
Cat. 4 to Cat. 3 5 race days and 20 points
Cat. 3 to Cat. 2 5 race days and 25 points
Cat. 2 to Cat. 1 5 race days and 30 points
Points:
National championships, Category A, B, or C track race will be 7, 5,3,2,1 for each event.
For all other events, upgrade points are 5,3,2,1 and are based on an omnium of the event’s races.
Attendance at a USA Cycling Development Camp will count as one qualifying race for category 5 to 4 upgrade. It will also count as 4 upgrade points for a category 4 to 3 upgrade and 3 upgrade points for a category 3 to 2 upgrade.
Additional Considerations:
1. Ten person field minimum for category 3-5 and 20 person field minimum for upgrade to category 1.
SUPPORT LOCAL TRACK RACING - BRING A FRIEND (OR TWO)
2. Fifty percent of Upgrading points and number of times raced will be carried over to the next year.
Points do not carry over to the next category.
3. When upgrading to a Cat. 1, points earned need to be from more than one velodrome.
4. A race day is defined as one full day of racing. A race day can include a number of events such as a
kilometer, sprints or time trial, but it only counts as one race day.
5. Women and Juniors earn one point for every five race days when upgrading from Cat. 4 through Cat.2.
6. Races exempt from upgrading are Youth races and races of more than two categories (i.e.: “A” and “B” races).
With the approval of USA Cycling, riders who are Pro or category 1 on the road may be upgraded to category 2 on the track and riders who are category 2 on the road may be upgraded to category 3 on the track without first having to begin at category 5.
