As a woman, a mountain biker, and an active participant of the bike industry (from the LBS employee to tour guide to pedicab to bike manufacturer to advocacy and outreach) for over 13 years...I find this thread amazing and amusing.
Many of my female friends ask me for advice when shopping for a bike and getting fit to bikes (something I've studied for several years). A few have asked me to be their "wing" woman as they go to different shops seeking the perfect bike and frankly to find the shop that will be their service center for years to come. This is interesting to me because as far as I know, there is no shortage of bike shop employees in Portland, nor Oregon in general. Eventually they find an LBS they love, or one they will put up with ; )
I concur with a number of opinions expressed in this thread about specific shops, good and bad. That said, if you want to speak with me about mountain bikes in a shop setting, shoot me an email or visit Sellwood Cycles on Saturday June 18th. They have a solid base of female customers, and even sponsor an all women mtb and cx race team. Thus far they've done this without having any female employees.
Just sayin'
