Re: Important information for people who spend time onabike

I notice that a lot of the "numbness" complaints are from people new to cycling or coming back to cycling after a long layoff. Sheldon Brown suggested weak legs have something to do with this. Newer cyclists sit with more of their weight on the saddle while more conditioned cyclists bear more weight on their feet. That's one reason the saddle gets less comfortable when you ride outside of your comfort time zone. If you normally ride 2 hours, hour 4 of an epic ride will get uncomfortable.
Just my 2 cent anecdote.

Agreed, getting the right fit and the right saddle will make things OK. For some people, finding the right saddle is easy and some it's more challenging. But once the bike fit is correct and the right saddle is matched to the right person, these issues should go away.

I'll add my two cents. Make sure the seat fits your pelvic structure. When I started racing years ago, I went through four saddles before I found what works for me. I thereupon bought three "backups" in case they quit making the model that fits.( Which they have. )

Such data would be difficult to collect observationally, because most
people aren't going to speak about this as freely as they would their cool
new (insert bike part here). Doesn't mean it's not out there, or not an
issue.

"Who here beats their spouse?"
"Who here pees in their shower?"
"Who here gets tingling junk and decreased 'performance' off the bike?"

Anyone who thinks that these questions are as likely to elicit an honest
response as "Who here likes (insert cold, refreshing beverage of choice
here) after a great ride?" is simply kidding themselves.

At one point, there wasn't much evidence for a round earth, either.

(I am going to write this down... I think this is the first time I've
disagreed with Mike--ever!)

Anecdote is not data. There is not much to indicate that the millions of men world wide who are riding bikes regularly are being damaged by traditional bike saddles. YMMV

I respectfully disagree that this is fear mongering from the NYT.

Upon reengaging with cycling about five years ago, I was experiencing numbness after long rides. After buying an ISM seat, numbness is not a concern.

Though I get some grief for my, "silly seat" from fellow riders, I'm very glad to be riding on it and being kind to my body.

Thank you,

Fergus
