Lower Nehalem/ Foss Road ??

The valley past Vernonia has rolling hills but no major climbs. You
can also get to vernonia by taking the MAX to hillsboro, heading to
banks, then the banks-vernonia rail-trail which is gradually uphill
except for a short switchback at tophill when you cross 47.

If I remember the dirt starts a couple miles from the 26/foss road
intersection, and continues to the intersection with miami-foley road.

There's awesome, cheap hike/bike camping at nehalem bay state park.

Have fun!

Great information !! If I do the ride it will be in about a month... i
think i will chance then unless of course we get a bunch more rain..

I am thinking to go up to the scappose-vernonia road drop down to the
nehalem river to the coast. Since I am somewhat out of shape, other then
the climb on scappose vernonia road, is there much up and down going along
the river ? I am hoping it is mostly flatish ? How many miles of dirt ?
Is the dirt only on Foss rd from the salmonberry into towards nehalem city ?

thanks again from JOhn

I've done it when the water was lower, the river was easy but the
banks are fairly steep. Its fun! Take your panniers off and move
them in a second trip.

I wouldn't necessarily count on being able to walk across now given
how high rivers have been but it might be OK.

26 from that point west doesn't have much of a shoulder and I've heard
that 53 is busy and narrow shoulder but haven't ridden that one
myself.

Foss road is dirt, you can ride it on a road bike but it would be less
bumpy on 28's or wider.

I know the bridge is washed out at the salmonberry river. Anyone been able
to"portage" the river, get across safely, shouldering a bicycle ? Or has
anyone put an eye to it recently (water level...) and can comment wether it
would even be possible.
