Bike Damage on Cartop

Of course he is telling you that it will be easier to try to get it
covered under some other insurance. That is his job.

Strange conversation with my insurance agent this morning and he has never had a claim like this in all his years. Have to think this happens more often than he thinks (I did it myself 15 years ago pulling into my spot at an apartment). He says the car will be obviously covered under our auto policy, but there is a massive grey area with regards to the bike being on a rack on the car and making a claim on our homeowners policy would be alot easier if the bike had just been stolen. Any feedback or info would be much appreciated.

You need to advocate hard for yourself with either the auto or home
insurance company. Your car, rack and bike should be covered (less
deductible) unless there is some provision stating it is not so. Be
positive!

Would you like me to steal the bike?
Just set it in the driveway with the damaged rack parts.

Pretty common story. Happened to a guy I work with last year. Also
happened to a woman I work with about 10 years ago. In both cases they were
driving home from the bike shop with new bikes on new roof racks. Neither
had ever been ridden beyond the shop test ride before they were destroyed.

Typically your bike will be covered under your home or rental policy.
I was involved in a nasty auto/bike crash 7 years ago and my renters
insurance paid for the initial cost of replacing my bike.

For those who rent a house/apt, I strongly encourage you to purchase
renters insurance. It costs me $155.00/year at the time. Best purchase
we ever made.
