A link about cheap carbon!

the picture looks like the fork steerer tube broke, not the frame. i say not real. if the bike was manufactured on 5/11 and is raced 4 days later, how did it get to the race from Asia? who built it? overtight stem? no spacers?

I know, I know, it's on the web, it must be true

PSA: Don’t Buy Cheap Carbon Frames off of eBay!
The picture attached shows exactly why you do not buy cheap, no-name, carbon frames. The owner of this bicycle was racing it when the steerer tube separated, he crashed in the middle of a race and slid on his face for about 8 feet. When he finally stopped sliding, he did not move. The ambulance was called, and in the time between crashing and the ambulance coming, the owner lost over 1 cup of blood from his face. He was rushed to the hospital to have emergency facial reconstruction on his cheek, and all of his team members decided to quit the race, or leave before they could race, to accompany him at the hospital. He will survive, but with lots of scars and road rash. This is a warning to everyone. Do not buy cheap carbon frames, because as you can see, you get what you pay for. To put it into perspective, this frame was built around 5/11/11, and it was raced 5/15/11, obviously this cant be from overuse.

This eBay store, among others, sell these cheap frames. Please, for the sake of injury, do not buy one of these frames. 8 hours ago21 notes

I could not agree more on buying what you can afford. My question would be more about the rider (weight, steerer stack height, etc) and the new world desire that if your bikes not carbon then it's not fast. Some theory's have been thrown around that the big tours have seen more crashes because of the poor braking surfaces on carbon wheels. So how much safety are we sacrificing for technology? I am a gram counting fool, so a bit of a hypocrite but it's an interesting didcussion.

Just a thought, but mechanical failures like this happen even to bikes with
'stickers' on them.

The general concept of supporting smaller businesses and all that is great,
but this is almost more of a scare tactic.
This bike wasn't made in some dark corner of the world where carbon is laced
with chicken feed, it's the same Taiwanese factory as the other entry level
Pinarellos. The carbon is often slightly heavier, but it's being used in
various other parts sold as "name brand" and for the most part, has no major
differences.

Many of us buy what we can afford and if a name brand is being advertised as
"the only safe option", many of us might lose sight of *any* option.

*"Do not buy cheap carbon frames because as you can see, you get what you
pay for."*

This conclusion wouldn't win you any prizes at the Third Grade Science Fair.
