Great to see all of the discussion on the site. One thing to remember: If you have paid taxes you have already adopted any public road you can legally ride your bike on. I think that the crux of this issue is not cyclist or the racing community failing to "get involved", it is careless and ignorant drivers breaking the law and endangering the lives of legal road users. The solution to this problem is education on the legal use of the roadway by all users and the enforcement of current laws.


I believe that Oregon has finally adopted the MUTCD (BTA can chime in) it can now place shared-lane markings aka "sharrows" but the restriction is that they cannot be on roads designated for travel greater than 35 mph.

As far as adopting a road, this is outstanding! Off the top of my head, I know of one cyclist/commuter who has done this north of Hwy 26. Its on NW 143rd Ave by Sunset High School (Kat Iverson adopted it - her partner is Hal Ballard of the Washington Cty Bicycle Transportation Co).
