rock creek guy

Th Oregonian's commuter columnist Joseph Rose would be worth a try since
he often writes about traffic law issues.

I have contact information for Dave Salesky but I'm going to wait to
see what more people think before moving on it.

Great idea. The piece can highlight the law and the proper response in a civilized society. Nothing like a little public shame.

I wonder what people's thoughts are on involving the mainstream media.

Dave Salesky at KATU is a cyclist and they have an "On Your Side"
segment as well as Thom Jenson who often takes on controversial
subjects.

In responding to my own comment I thought I should add the following. I would suggest a piece in the main stream media around the law being discussed and the proper response. Even if you feel the somehow a bike is getting in your way and not following the law as you see it, the proper response is not to harass the cycling with threatening behavior with your vehicle. Get this guy shown in a public light how his behavior is is just over the top.

A few cops in the group would be helpful. Conversation won't work but he might listen to a citation or arrest...

This is not your garden variety hot head or loon. Reading all the comment is appears he has staked out an extreme position and is ready to push it to the limits. Making the bar complaint against Ray Thomas, shows me this guy is for real and means business. He is not going to change his mind, but an effort can be made to change his behavior. It will take a wide variety of approaches to illustrate to him that he has to at least stop harassing cyclist.
Law enforcement, community pressure and business pressure all need to be brought into action. If something is to be done, it must create pressure from many fronts. His friends, neighbors and family need to be made aware of his "odd" behavior. A few visits from the police are needed. Someone whose council he considers must tell him he has gone too far. Hard to organize and effort but learning how to deal with these as a community is worth the effort to avoid the next one because we are close to someone being run down just for riding a bike.

Maybe he never got a bike as a kid and we should try giving him one. Although I do agree that he is awful and deadly and we should do something soon.

The ideas of becoming more community oriented, philanthropic, and "visible" are all good, but make no mistake about this person - he could care less. He does not want to "Make friends" with cyclists. He firmly and unwaveringly believes we do not belong on the road. period. "Roads are for cars. Riding a bike is a pastime." Again this is where I ride and I'm not leaving.
