Clark, Folks with Tandems often have the same problem... Some of the
best tandem hubs offer only Shimano compatibility, but the Campy
shifters are a preference for many of us because of their more
positive shifting (Shimano lovers will demur, of course). The
conversion spacer kit that's available works fine, with the only
problem being that most of Shimano's cassettes have the bottom three
or four gears mounted on a spider, and can't be re-spaced with the
conversion kit. American Classic's kit is only available in 12-23
and 12-25... plenty of range for a single bike, but a bit steep for a
tandem (especially for one with a double chainring front). I
understand that there is a cross bike gear set that offers a greater
range and is constructed so that it can be re-spaced all the way to
the inner-most cog, but I haven't connected with one yet.
I have used a Phil Wood/Shimano wheel in my (otherwise Campy) tandem
without conversion spacers and it works OK, with only one sketchy
gear combination. It works in a pinch, even if not optimum (and a
bit noisy).

So much like you I searched and searched. I found a
spacer kit being offered by Bradford Bikes in Conn.
Their kit contained ONLY the spacer rings, but it
works great. If I remember correctly their price was
about 20 dollars for everything.
