It takes the proper training, diet and mental fortitude to race the 'Cross
Crusade at the Johnson Farm. (well not really, but roll with me here a
little...)
Therefore, we have thoughtfully developed the following method of
preparation to ready you for the rigors of 'Cross Crusade #4 this Sunday.
What is this new-fangled method you ask? Simple, it's a Festival of 'Cross.
What exactly is happening at this "Festival" you ask? Truth is, we don't
know exactly what is going to happen either, but here is a reasonable
outline of activities you can expect.
Noon to ?- Spooky Glass Happening: Glass blowing, including special
limited edition 'cross crusade/ Halloween items. Special awards will also
be blown for Sunday's race.
Noon to 5pm- Pumpkin Carving Contest: dozens and dozens of pumpkins will
be on hand so you can show off your skills at artfully gouging these
seasonal gourds. Judging will be held in the 5 o'clock hour. Awards to the
top 3 "artists".
All Day (noon to ?)- Cider Press: What is cooler than making your own
apple cider? Okay, probably lots of things, but it's still pretty cool.
Bring your own apples as Johnson Farm is a tree farm, not an apple orchard.
You'll probably want to bring your own water too just in case (bottle's too
if you're planning on taking some home).
1pm- Poker Ride: Take out that 'cross steed or MTB and ride an extended
race course. Along the way, collect your poker hand (5 cards at 5 different
checkpoints). Best Hand wins.
3pm- Hash Run: The Oregon Hash House Harriers are starting a hash run at
the Johnson Farm. These runs are not competitive and a complete blast.
Distance is determined on the fly depending on the hare's mood, but it is
usually somewhere in the 4-6 mile range. Worth doing if you've never done
one. There is a $6 fee to pay for beer, food and whatever else is
associated with this event. This is not a 'Cross Crusade event, but we like
'em.
3pm-? Pig Roast and Potluck: The pig is suppose to be ready to eat
starting around 3pm. There will also be wanks and maybe something else as
well. This is a potluck though, so bring a dish or two if you plan to
partake in the food.
5pm- Headless Horseman: Ride your bike w/o your head (okay, it's just
covered). Your co-pilot will guide you to the pumpkin pick up and then back
to the starting line. Fastest time wins.
Free overnight camping on Saturday night for Sunday's Crusade race. Beer
provided by Portland Brewing. Non-alcoholic beverages will also be made
available for purchase. Costumes are encouraged for Saturday (and
especially for Sunday) but not necessary.
Notes: If you are planning on camping, it is req'd that you bring your own
essentials (water, food, toothbrush, etc). We are not planning a Bed &
Breakfast outing here. We also have no idea how many people will show on
Saturday, so we may be short on food or drink if you don't bring your own.
