"... and don't forget to cover your helmet with bright and shiny aluminum

thank goodness! I thought we were starting to share the time honored tricks
for preventing mind reading. as everyone knows aluminum foil wrapped on ones
head reflects the potential for mind reading and more importantly mind
control. It would make racing a whole lot harder if my Jedi mind powers were
thwarted. whew... mylar is fine, I can get around that one.

Please! That's Mylar, not foil (Art Media, Portland)! And it doesn't do
anything at night or on a gray day. In sunlight, though, it's pretty
visible.
Bright white is probably the best all-around choice for helmet, having some
augmentation with reflector tape (Sanderson Safety, NAPA Auto, Beth).
For dedicated night riding, I have a bike (and helmet) covered with
reflective tape, mostly white. Once the tape is applied, it's pretty hard
to remove - putting it on the cranks was quite a decision, but very
worthwhile in the name of safety! With added lights, I get quite an obvious
berth from cars at night.
