Re: Chain links and Tech

Good god people, learn how to read ! :)
"wd-40 again, let it dry overnite*, then chain lube."*

the WD-40 is for cleaning (and *it is a light oil*... no matter all the
exclamation otherwise ! someone told me it actually has fish oil in it
?? )

Keeps the rust off overnite /displaces water. I then use a* chain lube* the
next morning ! i personally use a heavier oil, so that it last longer,
because i try to never oil a dirty chain.

and i didn't call anyone stupid :) just imo taking the chain off the
bike to clean is stupid. but my opinion.

Sorry in hindsight, I should have had a modifier, saying imo taking the
chain off is stupid if you have a garden hose available. Some dont have
garden hoses/ a yard to clean a bicycle, so then taking the chain off is
probably the way to go.

Someday maybe i will design a chain cleaning/lube station powered by the
bike.

I didn't mention a vise grips either ! just channellocks or even a normal
pliers .
I guess I need to make a youtube video :)

WD-40 was named (according to the lore) for Water Displacement, version #40.

It is basically Stoddard Solvent, AKA White Spirit ( see Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_spirit. ) It is what it is, a solvent.

John................We can all do it our own way and maybe your way is the best....but I will not call you stupid for your method of cleaning.
ronnie
I like your idea of the vice grips.......great tools for various types of jobs.
Thanks,

Good God people. Just take normal pliers / channellocks, put the master link between the jaws, then cock it a little so one jaw is one side of the chain and the other jaw on the other side plate. press..

IMO, taking the chain off the bike for a cleaning is stupid anyway. backpedal while spraying the dirt off with a garden hose. run a little wd-40 / kerosene / dish soap, biodegradeable is good, a grudge brush, blast again with the garden hose. wipe off, wd-40 again, let it dry overnite, then chain lube.

If cleaning / re-lubing the chain takes more then 3-5 minutes you are doing it wrong.

never lube a dirty chain. I put wd-40 in drip bottle, so i don't waste it. if you twist the chain and hear gritty, repeat. never had a problem getting the chain totally clean.

River City has them. I no longer curse and swear when I need to get the dirty link off. Works for 10 speed too.

WD-40 is also a true contradition: Solvent based lube!

WD-40 is the absolute worst thing for a chain and should only be applied on an opponents bike, under the guise of "helping". I'm looking at you Ed Jones and Chris Leach lol.

WD-40 is great for cleaning but not long term lube.
If I know I'm going to cleaning the team bikes after a crit, (short, dry event) I'll spray the chains with WD-40. It will get the chains though a short, dry event and get me a jump start on cleaning afterwards.
These are some of the tricks race mechanics use to save on sleeping time.
