36 t for 34t on compact, funcitonality question

I am guessing you have a 10 speed bike/chain and tried to put a 9 speed 36 tooth ring on it. Ten speed rings, chains, and spacing between rings is smaller and throwing in a 9 speed small ring will result in the chain dropping into the middle "no mans land" and spinning there suspended above the teeth. FSA rings for 10 speed that are stamped S-10 and N-10 have worked well for me. Some people (including some shops) say mixing 10-9 is not a problem but that was not my experience. Arlo

I changed the 34 t inner on my 50/34 Ultegra 6700 with a 36t FSA ring I got at River City. Apparently Shimano doesn't make a 36 t 110bcd ring.
Sadly, chain will occasonally drop almost in between chainrings now with big to small shifts in front, leaving me spinning helplessly (briefly).
Has anyone else made the same type of change and had better luck with another ring? I saw that some might have better luck with a SRAM ring, but it would be great to hear if anyone has reliably made such a conversion before buying/trying again.
