This has been my experience on the Pacific Crest trail as well. Ankle deep mud in the boggy areas, and huge chunks torn away on the uphill sections, caused by hoof traffic. Other than trail remediation, or making trails off limits to equine traffic, I'm not sure there's a good solution to this.
