Re: Oregon Law of Passing Relating to Bicycles

For those of you who have followed the Rock Creek/Skyline Honker and issues about motorists refusing to pass bicyclists I have tried to write the most up to date and complete article possible that includes the actual text of the Oregon statutes. I hope it is helpful as the law provides a good system for motorists and bicyclists that makes honking and aggressive driving completely unnecessary (and dangerous) since the laws already allow motorists to go around slow moving riders when it's safe to do so.

For those interested in going, the Skyline Grange is located at:

11265 NW Skyline Blvd, Portland, OR 97231
maplink: http://g.co/maps/udprj

I live 1/4 mile from the Grange, and ride these roads regularly. I hope that those of you who also ride up here AND that have CONSTRUCTIVE opinions and attitudes show up and support bicyclists on these roads. It's one of the best riding areas in the greater Portland Neighborhood, and I believe that the Skyline Neighborhood Association is showing that they want to work with the community to make it a better and safer place for all users of our neighborhood roads.

Thanks!

The good people of the Skyline Ridge Neighborhood Association have set Nov. 9, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Skyline Grange for a forum on sharing Skyline roads.

The forum will be facilitated by Stan Sitnick, a professional mediator, biker, driver, and McNamee Road resident, and with legal interpretation provided by attorney Mark Ginsberg.

The basic setup envisioned, subject to Stan's guidance on how best to structure the night, will be each side bringing up a point, one at a time, a set time for discussion of that point, legal interpretation, and then on to the next point, with both bikers and drivers having equal time to voice their concerns.

The forum will be published in the next Skyline Ridge Runner, due out soon, with an open invitation to area residents to come and be heard. We'd love it if you could promote it within OBRA so we can be sure the voices of bikers are well represented.
