Needed: CX Pedal Recommendations

Tom Bird

2011-10-07

I have ridden Atak's for years mountain biking but that was on the dry side
of Washington. After my 2nd cross race I got a set of Egg Beaters and have
not looked back. I was always worried about hot spots or not enough
platform but they really are perfect for our gloppy mud. I have even
switched my mountain bike out and have never had a problem after many miles
and a lot of downhill.

I would say the only issue I have ever ran into is a rock I never see just
after the 3rd switchback on Hide and Seek at Sandy ridge I always seem to
hit the bottom of the pedal and cause it to pop my foot out. I would say
that is the exception.

PLUS you can rebuild them and get them cheap on sale. As others have said,
great float and they just work.

The SPD's were a complete waste at Blind Date last night. The double pinch
flat didn't help much either (thank you velodrome apron!). I'm really tired
of failed re-entry into the pedals. What have you found are the most
consistent pedals to clip in to in all weather? I am considering egg
beaters, candy 3's, and Time Atak's. OK to reply direct if you don't want
to clog up the chat board. Thank you!

Brett makes a good point, but it really depends on the type of shoe you
use. MTB shoes tend to have a lot more clearance and aren't an issue (in my
experience). It's possible that road shoes have a lot tighter
tolerances/clearance, and it's more of an issue in that case. Personally -
I've never had this issue across 8 years of racing, and I pretty much
trash/replace my shoes one or more times a year...

Make sure you buy the Crank brothers cleat wear plates when you buy the pedals or your shoes can be ruined. The egg beater part of the pedal rubs against the bottom of the shoe. These little plates mount between the cleat and the shoe.

Absolutely and unequivocally ... Crank Brothers Egg Beaters. I've been racing with them for over 8 years now, in gnarly, nasty, muddy, and filthy races year in and year out. Nothing else seems to *just plain work* in the mud like them. I've seen hundreds of racers with problems and they're always not using Egg Beaters. Egg Beaters clip in easily (3 different ways), have a forgiving float angle release that allows fair knee movement, releases easily, and best of all, sheds mud like crazy.

I had good luck with ATAC in the past, but they do wear out after a couple years. I found that my feet would slide to the outside of the pedal when they became worn... felt like I was pedalling on the side of my foot or something. But when they were new they were great!
