What if...just what if...in the crazy world of cyclocross................we put the number of safety pins on our jersey (in camera view of course) that equaled our race number. I would need 505 safety pins, Candi or whoever was working the lynx (would this be more work ) could count them and you would not need to deal with those flapping numbers when they pop free?

After helping pin a lot of numbers, and being an official at a few races, I've learned a few tricks. Like Mike Murray said, lots of pins help. But what also helps is to not put the pin through those holes on the corners of the number. If you do that, the number will flap and the pins will tear out easier. Put the pins through the paper/tyvek material and then through the jersey. Most of the numbers that tear free have been pinned through the holes.
