Glad it is currently working. The Bike Aid loosens AND lubes, unlike WD-40.

It turns out that my first instincts were right for once. I flooded the STI unit with WD40 and worked the levers until things loosened up. It took a while but it's shifting again. I also did the left side shifter as well. When it's shifting reliably than I'll dig out the Tri-Flow. Now if I could only find a similar method for my knees.

Thanks to those who responded.

Bike Aid Dri-Slide ( http://www.lubritek.com/bike-aid_lube ) does
wonders to free up almost anything. I have used it in STI levers and
other shifters with great results.

Should be able to find it locally.

I would do the same, put a few rags under the level so the oil doesn't make a mess.

i've done it on levers that were on the way out anyway, to buy some time before a full blown rebuild.

As for lore, I hear all pre-1995 STIs were haunted by Italians fans
and all current STI's used for cross are haunted by people who won't buy my RV!

I have a problem with an old Shimano 7-speed STI ( RSX) shifter. A friend pulled the bike from the basement where it's been sitting for six of seven years and I volunteered to clean it up and do a first level triage on it. Here is the problem: The right STI unit is non-functional. The levers twist back and forth like they are not connected to the shifter. My first instinct is to flush the shifter body out with WD40 to loosen up old grease/dust/whatever and see what happens.

Does anyone have experience with very old STI units coming out of long-term storage? What is the STI lore out there?

Thanks for any information.
