Bad Elf GPS add-on?

I use the EndoMondo add-on for Black Berry Curve, but I export/upload
data to
Strava also. Strava has had issues in the past with reading/evaluating
elevation
data, regardless of GPS unit (Garmin, Polar, MapmyRide, etc). The
support staff
at Strava are really good though and appreciate it when users inform
them
of potential problems and usage hiccups. They are quick to respond and
can fix
your 'event' within a day or so.

Is there a similar technology for Droid that anyone has had good experience
with??

Anyone tried the Bad Elf GPS add-on for the iPhone? Specifically with Strava
or MapMyRide? The elevation data I get from Strava with my iPhone is wildly
innacurate, and rather than investing in Garmin, I'm considering this.

Thom,

I'm not sure about any of the specifics you are mentioning ... other than
cautioning that GPS elevation readings are inherently inaccurate. The only
decent way to get good elevation change readings is with an altimeter which
uses barometric pressure. Which - of course, is fraught with error if you
don't keep it adjusted for barometric pressure changes (weather systems).

A basic overview of the error you can receive with altitude and GPS:
http://gpsinformation.net/main/altitude.htm

And a more advanced discussion of the reasons why elevation readings in the
GPS systems are inherently flawed:
http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/gps_elevation.html

My opinion - if you want more accurate elevation readings, use a device with
an altimeter function, and know that you should always reset your altitude
at known points before riding (i.e. at home where you know your precise
altitude), to adjust for current barometric pressure changes.

I've done a lot of map & compass work for Adventure Racing, using a
barometric altimeter while racing and setting/designing race courses with a
GPS. I always ignored elevation readings on a GPS because it was almost
never accurate (or accurate enough to determine a precise mapped location
with elevation as an input).

Good luck!
