Stolen bikes in Bend this weekend?

We here at Sagebrush Cycles discovered a neatly cut cable at closing this evening and we apparently have had a white Rocky Mountain Altitude Carbon stolen sometime between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. - i.e. broad daylight. A report has been filed with the Bend PD.

With that said, I'm actually posting this to the list more as a heads up to anyone and everyone in Bend this weekend.

The nature of this theft is unusual for a bike shop in this town. Normally, if we hear of a shop being ripped off, it's because of a test ride gone wrong - phony ID and/or keys left for collateral. In this case, a heavy-braided cable was cut VERY clean with what would have to have been a relatively large pair of high leverage shears. In addition, this was our slowest time today and the only individual in the store from 5 to 6 p.m. whom I did not know was a ragged 30-something man who smelled of Marlboros and asked a series of no-brainer questions, stepped out the door, looked around, and asked a few more questions. Then he was gone.

Thought nothing of it at the time, but now it looks like a pretty classic distraction while his buddy jacked an expensive rig outside.

Long story short, our weekend bike-gasm may have brought a few professional bike theifs to Central Oregon this weekend, so be on your guard.
