I'm searching for a bike to buy for a co-worker of mine for commuting. He is 6'5" 200 lbs. and has about $300-$500 to spend.
A single-speed road bike with a comfortable seating position (not a track-style bike) would be ideal, but geared is fine too. Mtn. bikes in the 20"+ range are also a possibility. He says he doesn't care about how it looks, and would just like something reliable that doesn't weigh a ton. He is not a cyclist and knows nothing about bicycles.
