I was waiting for someone to recommend you check out www.shipbikes.com - they have two box options (one for airline and one for FedEx / UPS) and even a calculator to figure your shipping costs for either. They can even get a discount price for shipping if you decide that way.

Of course, after doing all that I ended up choosing to rent when I went to Scottsdale for my son's school trip. Got to try a nice bike, about the same price, and zero risk for my home bike.

Has anyone tried Amtrak or Greyhound shipping services? I think Amtrak
will let you check a bike box at stations with checked baggage services for
a small fee. Check it here, then you pick it up later at its destination.
I think it's $55 if you have your own box.

Unfortunately, Amtrak doesn't have a station in Palm Springs, but Greyhound
will do it for $60 or so... Greyhound has insurance limits of $1000 so you
might want search around for other coverage options like if you pay with a
credit card or home owners ins. or something...
