Suggestions for gear ratios for my road bike?

I did something like that to my wife's Redline cross bike. She seems
happy with the setup, although some of the gear steps are a bit wide on
an 8 speed cassette. The one complaint I have heard, and experienced on
my bike is that the 28T cog is a big jump, but it's basically a bail out
gear. You could give up a little range and go 12-27 in back, my wife's
road bike has a 12-27 10 speed cassette with a 34-50 crank and she loves it.

I really like my old trek 5200. But I'd like to shed the heavy triple
crank. Going to compact crank and 11-28 would be the same low gear (which
I like for high cadence climbing) and a little faster high gear. Anyone
have a comment on the reduced overlap? The cog spacing of such a wide
cassette? Weight concerns? Other suggestions?

Thanks
Ben
