Trail conditions

An often overlooked and fantastic trail in Winter is Gorge Trail 400.  It has some tech, switchbacks, beautiful sections, and does well in the wet.

It was not, but most Oregon race promotors choose courses that are OK
in the wet.

Plus many trails that are fun to just go ride are terrible for a race.

WhyPass (eugene)
Longview/Castle Rock systems
Any of the dirt roads in the coast range. Not "trail" but can be fun
and slick enough to improve your skills.

I was in a race last year that was stopped mid-event because of mud.
The rains came in after the start.

I agree care should be taken not to rip up the trails during the winter
when there's a lot of mud, but there's also valuable training to be had in
that mud and snow. I've never seen a mountain bike race cancelled because
it's too muddy or there's snow on the course. It's good to know how to ride
in those conditions in Oregon. I guess that's one reason why volunteering
to do trail work is so important.

...and it's certainly true that some trails take mud riding much better then others.

What are the OBRA list's Top 5 MTB Rides that Hold Up Well In Winter?

I'd put:

Syncline
Sandy Ridge
Scappoose... Sometimes.

What else?

Agreed on all points. Take care of your trails and let your local elected officials know that you want good singletrack options in Portland.

Change is possible, even if it feels glacial at times. We didn't used to have Sandy Ridge, so we know that it can be done.

There were still a few traces of snow day before yesterday out at Scappoose in the protected areas.......but turning to mud fast.
Good point Phreadi..............I see sections of trail at Scappoose that would be in great condition if not ridden during very wet times.
That said. People need to have places to ride when they have time off (usually weekends) and places we ride that really are tree farms could be gone in an instant. Even trying to ride the high side (to minimize damage) of a trail if boggy can help take care of track unless high means riders are transforming 24” wide trail into 6’ wide trail. Ride smart and try to not hurt the dirt! It can even be fun to ride “rocky” logging roads in the really nasty season and discover new places to get lost.
Just thinking.....What if the City of Portland stepped up and provided their tax paying citizens sustainable single-track inside the city limits allowing them to recreate and or commute on bikes? Their view of sustainable is to send mountain bikers off to distant places in their motor vehicles (the dignity villages of dirt riding).

Probably better to avoid Brown's Camp all rainy season just for the sake of not ruining the trail.

Has anyone been to Browns Camp/Syncline/Sandy Ridge recently?

I've got the itch to get out on the MTB Sunday, but don't feel like driving to find out that they're snowed in/too muddy to ride.

Last Sunday Sandy Ridge had 2-6" of wet cement snow on the upper 2/3rds.
We had a nice slip and giggle ride. Not fast, lots of pushing, a nuber
of downed trees (some of which we removed).

Mud, mud, mud... WRT is probably your best bet. Between Elk Cr. and Jones
Cr. since it's kind of the rockiest terrain. But that storm that rolled
through might have left some damage...

Has anyone been to Browns Camp/Syncline/Sandy Ridge recently?

I've got the itch to get out on the MTB Sunday, but don't feel like driving to find out that they're snowed in/too muddy to ride.
