Westbound it is not necessary to get on the highway. It is legal to bike
on the highway (see http://www.stc-law.com/bikelinks.html). You will more
commonly see bikers on this highway as it gets closer to mount hood, but
this part is ok to ride as well.
I mapped from SW Zoo Rd to SW Salmon and SW 18th. The route on the highway
is 2.2 miles. The route through the zoo is 3.3 miles. Speedwise, the 2.2
miles is very fast. But still, it's a relatively small percentage of your
total trip so it really depends on how you're feeling. Try both ways. I
sometimes like the highway because it is so fast, especially when all the
rush hour traffic is crawling along.
PS: if you are going to do the highway, I would assume you leave your soft
race tires at home!
