Commute Question:Hillsboro to Portland

Westbound it is not necessary to get on the highway. It is legal to bike
on the highway (see http://www.stc-law.com/bikelinks.html). You will more
commonly see bikers on this highway as it gets closer to mount hood, but
this part is ok to ride as well.

I mapped from SW Zoo Rd to SW Salmon and SW 18th. The route on the highway
is 2.2 miles. The route through the zoo is 3.3 miles. Speedwise, the 2.2
miles is very fast. But still, it's a relatively small percentage of your
total trip so it really depends on how you're feeling. Try both ways. I
sometimes like the highway because it is so fast, especially when all the
rush hour traffic is crawling along.

PS: if you are going to do the highway, I would assume you leave your soft
race tires at home!

You take the shoulder from the Zoo exit to the Canyon Road exit. I'm pretty fearless about traffic but I'll only do this when 26 is a parking lot. I don't know how this works westbound, or if it's even possible.

But when the choice is "fast efficient route on freeway shoulder" and "time-wasting ramble through a silent forest" I'll almost always opt for #2. I'm funny that way.

FWIW the only climb from the Zoo exit to downtown is through the parking lot, about 125' over half a mile (http://app.strava.com/segments/709967 ). The shortcut along US-26 saves a lot of horizontal miles but not many vertical feet.

so out of curiosity, you actually get on the highway at the zoo, into
goose hollow? i see this on google maps all the time but wasn't sure
it was legal to ride the shoulder on a bike? I always want to do this
by the time i get to the zoo exit coming from beaverton, but always
just climb back up through the zoo and gardens to come down salmon st.
but this would be much less climbing.
thx

I do that commute in the opposite direction, from division/35th to the
Hillsboro airport. I usually take the max home in the evening, but when
I've ridden back, I've done it this way:

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=185th+and+cornell,+beaverton+or&daddr=45.5164035,-122.8384708+to:e+grand+and+burnside&hl=en&ll=45.532928,-122.841868&spn=0.029491,0.066047&sll=45.523608,-122.81878&sspn=0.029496,0.066047&geocode=FUvMtgId4jCt-CmDDbEaag-VVDH20zOExFVKUg%3BFXOGtgIdOqKt-CmBu8kI3w6VVDGZdkM8AQwsVw%3BFfOftgIdiliw-ClX-EatqKCVVDGrQ0mBIWXK6A&dirflg=b&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=15&via=1&t=m&z=15&lci=bike

There's a short exciting length on highway 26 itself. The shoulder is wide
and during rush hour the cars are crawling along.

Hello all,
Figured I'd throw this out because there has to be a few on here already doing this commute. Just moved last week, and would like to start riding to work. I'm riding from Hillsboro, lets say from basically Cornell Rd and 185th, to East Portland, near Grand and Stark. (a few block shy of Burnside and Grand). What is the super cool way to do this? Although I've ridden to Portland many times from here, it's always been on a sleepy weekend morning, and some of those roads are probably death traps during rush hour. I'd be on the road somewhere between the 7:30-8:30am range, depending on how long the ride takes. Any good, safe routes? Roughly how many miles and how long is it taking you? Please respond back to me, unless others are also interested, then I could repost back up on OBRA.
thanks!
Brian
