That is so sad. That bike racers get pushed around to make a bike venue available for another sport. Our sport has been hijacked by roller derby. Someone with some publicity skills needs should call out USA Cycling on this.

Out of curiosity what else could be taking place at the Velodrome that next week. Can surmise it probably conflicts with USA cycling officials calendars or event people at the springs.

In case you haven't heard, USA Cycling has changed the dates for the 2012 Masters Track Nationals from July 31-August 5 to July 24-29. I sent a rather strongly worded email to USA Cycling, and to their credit, I received a quick response. Apparently, the velodrome in Colorado Springs decided that the July 31-August 5 dates were not going to work, and USAC never bothered getting a written contract. I will let you decide what this says about USA Cycling as a professional organization. I have attached my email and the response that I received below.

Mr. Judson,

Thank you for your feedback. We certainly understand and share in your frustration over the date change of the 2011 and 2012 Masters Track National Championships. When we schedule events we have every intention of keeping that date because we do completely understand the potential additional expenses incurred and inconvenience of rescheduling airfare, lodging and rescheduling time off from work for many of our members.

In the most recent situation, we were absolutely powerless to the decision of the velodrome owners. In 2011, we were told that the 2012 dates were ours to use the velodrome until last week when we were notified they'd decided to change their schedule. Going forward, our intention is to get this in writing to avoid these scenarios from happening.

Again, we appreciate your feedback and share in your frustration.

Dear USA Cycling,

Scheduling conflict---really? This is two years in a row that USA Cycling has made a late change to the dates for the Masters Track Nationals, and for the second year in a row I will not have the option to participate. Some of us have to set our summer schedule early and do not have the option of making changes without encumbering a great deal of expense. I have a suggestion for USA Cycling---SET A DATE EARLY AND KEEP TO YOUR SCHEDULE. "Scheduling conflict" is a bad excuse for poor planning your part.

Not actually accurate. CO Springs has one of the very view banked roller skating tracks in the US. It is located in the infield of the velodrome so this is actually a shared facility. I can't speak to the scheduling process there but roller skate racing is a planned use for the facility and is VERY distinct from roller derby.

Ironically one of the other banked skating tracks is near my home. I believe there are only 3-4 of these facilities in the US.

Now that I have made my rant it, is time to reflect. We are actually lucky to have a venue and a time to ride. That does not make it any better for those who have made plans. Since we are not really a self supporting sport, we do and must rely upon the kindness of others. We live in a market based economy and those are the things we wrestle with in track cycling.
