Alpenrose Velodrome - Repost for the Saturday crowd

Just talked to Mike... This is happening soon. This isn't some far off
thing. Jump in so we can have a new track for the 2012 season! Imagine,
no more having your rear wheel kick 6" sideways coming out of turn 2 in the
sprinters lane! Put the money you'll save on replacing loose fillings
towards the track!

(sorry, just excited to see this happen :) )

OBRA has 5000 members. If everyone could come up wth $10, we could pay for 1/2 the project straight away. Please make your contribution to this project.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Alpenrose Velodrome - Repost for the Saturday crowd

I am reposting this for anyone who missed it yesterday. I just wrote my check.

This winter Stewart Campbell did an excellent job of power washing the velodrome to remove the old and flaking paint from the surface which was keeping new paint from adhering. When he got done it gave us an excellent view of the deteriorating concrete that had been masked by years of layers of paint. It was obvious that substantial work needed to be done to keep the velodrome running. In looking at the options we found that destructing and rebuilding the straights would fix most of the problems and, although expensive, could be done at a price that was not astronomical. I have gotten a bid on doing this as well as removing and replacing the apron. This project will make almost a new velodrome and will keep Alpenrose running for the next 20-30+ years.

I spoken with the owner at the Dairy and he agrees that this needs to be done. He has asked that we solicit help from the cycling community to offset the large cost. This is a very reasonable request as Alpenrose not only provides us with the velodrome at no cost. They also provide the storage space for vehicles and equipment that allows OBRA to run its business at no cost.

When we did the project to redesign and rebuild the transitions in 1998 I asked members of the bike racing community to make donations. I also asked that people commit to making a similar donation each year for a total of 5 years. This allowed me to go to the Dairy with a sum of money and a promise to for continued input.

I am asking that people contact me if they are willing to make donations. Any amount would be great but it would take many people donating $100 or more to get this project moving. Let me know if you are willing to make a 5 year commitment. Please direct payment to:

Portland Velodrome Committee 4318 SE 8th Ct. Gresham, OR 97080

The Alpenrose Dairy has contributed greatly to the success of bike racing and they have never asked for anything in return. This is an opportunity to show them how much you appreciate their support.
