Trying to promote a war between bikes and cars is dumb. I am sure that
most of the people on bikes also have cars. If you have both and use them
for transportation, should you hate yourself? The bikes are not going
away. Cars are going to get real inconvenient for the people who cling
to them as the only viable form of transportation. The oregonian is great
for stuffing into your wet cycling shoes at night so they are dry in the
morning. It is also great for cleaning glass to a streak free shine. Then
recycle it appropriately.

It has been shown several times that commercial vehicles (buses, cabs, trucks, etc) are one of the major causes of urban traffic congestion. New York City has had limited truck delivery times for years to keep the daytime flow of traffic under control. Back in the late 60's when Lindsay was mayor, there was a crisis (Lindsay seemed to have a LOT of crises) when the bus drivers threatened to go on strike at the same time when there was a crisis with the cab drivers. The bottom line was that there were going to be no buses or cabs. The late night negotiations failed and the city awaited a disaster ("My god, they're all going to drive their cars to work!"). To everyone's suprise, there was no huge traffic disaster. People drove to work and parked where they could (using bus and cab zones and anything else they could find) and traffic ran smoother than it ever had. Somehow the lesson never took hold.

You can take solace in the fact that the former editorial editor was apparently paying for sex. And is dead now. Check out Willy Week.

There's your bit of perspective for the morning.

But while I have no real love for the Oregonian, there is still a place for daily journalism. Covering the boring shit like council meeting and port bureau committees unearths stories no one else could or would find.

WW is a great investigative rag, but they simply don't have the reach of the O. Eventually, our daily will get its act together digitally so it can "afford" to grow its newsroom again. (That is the paper's greatest flaw IMO -- locked into a long stupid contract with the OregonLive "tech" that stifles growth and innovation. That said, even the NYT hasn't entirely figured out digital and they are at the bleeding edge.)

For all its flaws -- and you cited two that barely register for me -- and even with its diminished newsroom, it has better coverage than all the broadcast media and weeklies combined. What was Churchill's quote about democracy? It's the worst, least efficient, most frustrating form of government, but it's the better than all the alternatives.

Interesting that bicycles are ever cited as a cause of traffic
problems. I wonder what kind of a traffic problem Portland would have
if every bike-riding Portlander got into their cars simultaneously and
headed for the Oregonian's parking lot.

Should an example be made? Should the city of Portland see what it looks like when cyclists decide to drive?

Perhaps the reverse of a "critical mass" is in order. A "Critical Gas", if you will . . .

Ken,I'd definitely recommend unsubscribing from the Oregonian, your reason being but one of many.
