Critical Gas

My opinion of the Oregonian article and cyclists response..........
Fanning the flames probably will not help in my opinion. Do not let it turn
into a Jerry Springer event. It is better to use a vehicle like the BTA,
and an organization that needs to be formed if not already called the
"Oregon bicycle industry, wholesalers, retailers and builders Assn." (or
some such label) and let them show how much the bicycle riding public
actually do for our state. Shop owners etc. This might be a good
organization to put together if you have not already!!!
We all know the heavy vehicles and studs wreck our roads, but there are way
more of the motor vehicles drivers out there who are not in the moderate
camp who understand that. They instead are the targets of the Oregonian
article. They are the TRUE BELIEVERS. There is nothing short of death (and
probably not even that) which will change their mind about the perceived
disease cyclists bring to our society.
Use our resources to work the system in the most efficient manner. Keep
moving forward with the progress that has been made. Do not let small minds
move these advancements for non-motorized transportation backward into the
dark ages.
Other media outlets might be encouraged to do more reasoned reports on this
issue. The Oregonian writers viewpoint can easily be shown (to non-true
believers) as out of step with reality. They are pretty desperate to keep
circulation up. Maybe they sold an extra 100 papers with that issue! We
have options which is quite nice. Let your emotions rip here, but use wise
actions when out there in the "machine".
Rise above the crap people.

that's an excellent name for such a protest. we could put our bikes on our
roof racks and those without cars could load up with others. it would only
take 30-40 cars circling a downtown block to make our point.

I often think of this when motorists get impatient waiting for me to cross a
street, or make a turn. I want to ask them if it would be better if I went
home and got my 3500 pound Volvo. I could make some potholes then too.

If someone organized such a motorized protest I'm sure the media would show
and Portland could be the first to field such an event.

I have to admit that the same thought has crossed my mind before,
showing the everyday car driver that every bike they pass is one less
car that would otherwise be in front of them. And that "Critical Gas"
idea could do it.
Thing is that to be successful and effective at making the point it
needs to be done widely and in large numbers... which may be easier said
than done.
