mudslinger: sox n' shoes n' shoe covers n' stuff

The cheap and easy way is the bread bags inside the shoes over wool
socks. Your shoes get muddy even with shoe covers.

Fenders are great. I keep a front on year round, and a rear most of
the time. If you are losing and/or breaking them (often), you have the
wrong fenders. My current ones (Crud) are 4+ years old.

If you wet the glove or your finger with water the Shoe Goo will not stick to it which will make spreading it around easier.

If you insist on using shoe covers I recommend armoring them with Shoe
Goo, particularly the bottoms and toe area. They will not be destroyed
nearly so quickly that way.

Easiest way to do this is stretch some plastic wrap (from your kitchen)
over your shoes first. You may wish to stuff the shoes with some
newspaper to help hold their shape (this also can hold the plastic wrap
in place as you tuck it in the shoe). Then put the covers on the shoes.
Wear some thin gloves (latex if your not allergic) and smear the Shoe
Goo on the target areas. Work quickly because it thickens.
You should allow at least 12 hours for cure time and several days is
best. Do it in a well ventilated area because the stuff really stinks.

The "poor white trash" method is putting a newspaper bag over your socks. Apply duct tape to seal around the top. Guaranteed dry except for a little sweat. Thick wool socks help reduce the sweat factor.

I'd forget about the fenders as well... they'll just get broken or lost...

Thom,

Scott is right. For years I used to use Seal Skinz waterproof socks, along
with shoe covers. The water proof socks work fine, until you've sweated so
much, that it doesn't matter ... you're feet are wet. The shoe covers
never really work. They get thrashed if/when you get on/off the bike ...
and often torn by catching the right cover on the big ring teeth. I used
to use all of my old nearly dead road shoe covers for MTB action for that
reason, but they never last very long.

I finally broke down and got a pair (expensive!) of Shimano winter MTB
shoes. It was SOOOOO worth it. Waterproof, warm, decent traction ... no
bid whoop if I jump on/off in the mud, puddles, creek crossings, etc... My
feet stay dry and warm. Well, short of the sweating issue ... After 10
years of trying to avoid the expense of winter MTB shoes - I was so glad I
finally broke down and bought them ...

Your best bet would be to just break down and get winter mtb shoes. They rock.

Your shoes will be a muddy wet mess. Better just resign yourself to
that now.

I have used SealSkinz
socks
before with very good results.
