WOW! The 2012 PrestoVelo/BicycleAttorney.com Piece of Cake Road Race is tomorrow, Saturday, April 7!
First of all, thank you for the tremendous support of this event. It has literally taken hundreds of volunteer hours and a staff of about 50 PrestoVelo/BicycleAttorney.com people to pull this off. We hope you find this race to be hard, fun and fulfilling!
I have received a ton of email with questions about the race. Unfortunately I cannot answer any more messages, but I trust the following information will answer additional questions you might have. The rest will have to wait until tomorrow:
The Race:
The 2012 course follows the same 17.4 mile clockwise circuit as last year. It includes 3+ miles of gravel road. The surface seems more compact and faster than last year but we still recommend sturdy tires and wheels. A "virtual center line" rule will be enforced in the unpaved areas which means you won't always be able to seek the fastest line.
Start is located at Perrydale School (they are kindly allowing us to use their parking lot) at 7445 Southwest Perrydale Road, Amity, OR 97101-9725. PLEASE CARPOOL if you can; parking is very limited and we expect a lot of participants.
Details:
As you probably know, the Mens 4/5 race was expanded by 20% and is now full. We will allow 4/5 to race with Masters 4/5 but you must register day of race and you will be ineligible to win prizes.
Numbers right and back. Both numbers are required.
Yes, there will be a feed zone for groups who do 3+ laps. On the hill past the staging area. This is within walking distance of the school so NO CARS will be allowed in this area. OBRA officials will address rules before your start.
Women's pre-reg is up to 10 riders each in 1/2 + 3 and 4/5 + Masters fields. If we get 15+ in each field we will have separate caravans. 1/2 women wanting to ride a longer distance may race with Masters Men and will be eligible for prizes.
Men's 1/2 and Women's 1/2 will have Neutral Wheels Support provided by Maestro-mechanic Jason Pfeifer. Other races will have YOUR wheels in a follow car. Officials will discuss rules day of race.
Prizes and Sponsors:
As part of the Oregon Cup, POC will be distributing $750 to the top 15 Cat 1/2 Men and $250 to the top 4 Cat 1/2 Women. Oregon Cup leaders will have free entry into this race. The defending Cat 1/2 champions are Jake Hansen and Sue Butler.
In addition to prizes, all category winners will receive cakes plus some fantastic Paris/Roubaix-esque trophies. Check out a photo at Oregon Cycling Action. These things are HEFTY! We're looking forward to some awesome podium shots of skinny-armed cyclists trying to lift these things!
Cash and merchandise prizes are thanks to our fantastic sponsors: Bike N Hike, Hopworks, Kiwi Outdoor Rep Group, CycleSoles, Nancy's, Elk Cove Vineyards, Sports Nutrition Center, KoolStop, and Enzo's. Give them all your thanks for supporting this event.
The 2012 POC winner's cakes are provided by the Perrydale Girls Softball team as part of a fundraising effort. Don't forget to visit their bake sale in the school gym!
Important behavior notes:
Getting permission to run a bicycle race in a rural community is no small feat... not to mention getting permits from two counties and ODOT. Please model exceptional Citizen OBRA behavior so we will continue to be welcomed back.
By law, absolutely no alcohol is permitted on school grounds... not even an after-race libation.
Toilet facilities will be supplied. We will be offering a BOUNTY on public urination: photograph and identify a violator and receive free entry to this event.
Please pack out your own trash: do not litter anywhere on the course or start area. Leave no trace.
See you there!
