MORE ON PIECE OF CAKE

Leibowitz, Flo

2012-04-11

I sure like the idea of offering a day of service to the community whose firehall was, um, defaced? What if a personal call paid to the sheriff who wrote to Hugh (by Hugh, by Kenji?) offering just such a thing? Guys, I don't mean to make work for you....but this seems to be one place the thread could go.

Of course, this will have meaning only if the out-of-potty peeing doesn't happen again. AND if we can be sure that the ball would be picked up by OBRA folks.

And yes, I would make a point of it to be there to work that day, if such a project comes to pass. Who else?

Are there any community service projects these rural towns could use some help with? I'll bet there are some skills that the OBRA community can help share with these small towns in exchange for using their roads for a day.

I realize not many people would be interested in this... over at Walla Walla I was the only bike racer to attend the Waitsburg pasta feed and fundraising auction last year - despite it being advertised in the race bible if I remember correctly.

However, I think it would be cool if a bunch of racers got together and brought something back to these rural communities instead of just leaving you know what on their lawns. Perhaps race for free if you volunteer at a community service event?

Actually 7 years ago Hutch's was the first team in Central Oregon to
adopt one of our local roads. As well as being on a popular route it
is also the feed zone for one stage of the Cascade Classic.

One, it's completely impossible.
Two, it's possible, but it's not worth doing.
Three, I said it was a good idea all along.

well team leaders know who ride for them, the jersey thing would rarely be
an issue....Almost ever team in OBRA does not hand out or sell their team
jerseys, in the case of shop sponsored jerseys, then it still goes back to
if you are a paid member of that team and if you get DQed from a race for
doing something really stupid then your team leader knows who you are and
can then exercise some penalties....I know teams, bike racing, hanging out
with people you train with is a fun thing and talking about this crap kinda
sucks....But it's the reality when you have a few people that think they are
above the rules, that is what takes the fun out of it.....so we should just
remove that component and then we are back to having fun again, see it's
easy : )

I agree whole heartedly that we need some greater deterrent. But, the
team enforcement concept is more complicated than it might appee-er.

I'm not aware that OBRA policies who registers as part of a team with
the individual team reps to confirm their affiliation. Particularly
when your team's title sponsor is a bike shop or product manufacturer
that sells the same jersey to the broader public, I have had the
experience of new OBRA members not formally affiliated with our team,
but bought the jersey at the store, show up at a race, decide to sign
up use write down their team name to match the jersey they just
bought, and then break some rule like peeing in public, wear
headphones during the race after being warned in warm ups,
unreasonable argue with an official, litter, toss a water bottle in
some one's yard, flip someone off, run a stop sign, etc.

If we do go to a team penalty enforcement, we will need to be more
diligent about confirming team affiliation of OBRA members with each
team's OBRA rep annually.

Thx

From all reports there was minimal to no wait for the facilities. The behavior of the participants inadequate not the supply of facilities.

An important thing here is to read between the lines of Hugh's note. He is tired of dealing with this stuff. This behavior not only jeopardizes venues but it also chews up race organizers, sponsors, volunteers, etc.

Yes, just speaking of the POC, there was NO issue with waiting in lines at
all....so that never could be an excuse last Sat....
as I said in earlier emails, I used them 3 times before my race time and
there was never a line, I walked right up and climbed in....And I agree with
Troy, face the music, or the team leader should have enough integrity to
come out and apologize for his teams actions....The fire dept. who knows who
that was, solo or a team member?.....Hopefully, we as group, OBRA can come
up with a better solution to dealing with stuff like this....When we start
loosing race venues because of the arrogance of people they should have some
harsh penalties.....

This isnt a question about lack of facilities. It is more a lack of
common-decency
by some members of the OBRA peloton. I have had as many as 6 porta
potties at the
TT with no lines and STILL people snuck off to use the
bushes/buildings/etc.

I like this idea,

grantcollins@ymail.com

2012-04-10

Learn from it for the next time and add more porta potties thru out the venue, 600 racers all having to pee three or four times before a race. Charge accordingly, add a porta potty fee to each racer?

Just my 2 cents. I've been to some of these races 30 people deep waiting in line to use one. And I've never peed anywhere but the porta potties and don't condone the behavior!

I find it interesting that the perpetrators of this ruckus have not come
forward to fall on their sword and apologize for their conduct or attempt
to somehow repair the damage they have caused.

Lets all remember that in the late 90's the bananna belt races were down
just south of the POC race, near the Ankeny wildlife refuge. A perfect
early season course. The race was shut down because some world class cat
6's had to throw their water bottles and powerbar wrappers off the side of
the road into the wetland refuge! The county sent out an observer, in a
car........bada bing bada boom.......No more race here. Next year, if they
allow the race, the bicycle haters will be out in force.

Sorry Hugh. You and your team and your sponsors are very classy and have
been for years. I is very hard to dedicate so much time and energy to put
on a great event. Its even harder when someone gets caught peeing on a fire
station. It is sad we (the cycling community) will have to answer for that
for years.

Wow, Hugh this is really to bad, I agree totally with what you said.
I think team leaders should have some type of responsibilty to police thier
own teams in matters like this, I am sure most do but some don't that's for
sure.....and deal with people that are suppose to be supporting team
sponsors, mates and OBRA. All you clowns that think that hanging it out at
races is cool, I hope you realize what you are doing to race promoters, OBRA
and the way that people look at bike racing in genaral when you see emails
like this from important people in these small communities...We all know its
a very small % for sure, but that small % makes the large % look pretty
stupid and childish....Lets hope YOU, your teams and leaders learn something
from this email and this past weekend....GROW UP.....

Please see the copied email below.

I'm sure I'm not the only race promoter to have to deal with this kind of stuff, and I feel like a nag. But the OBRA community needs higher awareness of what promoters have to deal with when putting on an event. I think the rank and file have no appreciation for what it takes to put on a road race. It's really hard work and there is zero financial incentive to do it.

Regarding the email below, I rather suspect that this offense is in addition to the barn incident. And now I really fear that three years of relationship building have gone down the drain.

I hate having to deal with this. I just hate it. Not only do I lose face but the entire cycling community - not just race community - suffers for the thoughtlessness of a few. I understand that OBRA needs to have hard evidence to mete some kind of punishment. But I'd sure like to see harsher, TEAM penalties adopted by OBRA in the future. Apparently gentle appeals do not work.

Our entitled individual and collective behavior has got to improve or we will not be able to road race anywhere in the future.

Other promoters, please chime in and share your experiences on today's talk show...

Hi, My name is Bruce Hubbard the Fire Chief for Amity Fire District. This last Saturday April 7, 2012 early in the morning one of my Volunteer Firefighters observed a bicyclist urinating on our brand new Fire Station near the Perrydale School. This disappoints me very much to learn this kind of thing going on. This station is less than a year old and our community is very proud of that station. I am taking into consideration for next year making that a no trespassing piece of property. I would contact the Polk County Sheriff and have everyone sited that would enter the property on that day. So please advise all of your riders that this kind of behavior is ridiculous and will not be tolerated by me or the Fire District. I look forward in hearing back from you on this matter.

Thank You
