We have destructed the straights of the velodrome and already have poured
replacement. The feedback from riders who have been out on the track has
been extremely positive.
The estimate for this was $40K. As is the case with most construction the
actual bill was $51K. We have raised $34 K currently from 199 members from
New Zealand to Chicago and Seattle to LA.
The next phase is to replace the apron. (The flat portion that is the inside
of the track. That estimate is also $50K.
OBRA is a 501c3 so any contribution would be TAX DEDUCTIBLE

Candi,
That's a very good idea. Can you provide me with a "quick facts" summary for
that purpose? It would be helpful if I could summarize the scope, costs and
donation response in the pitch.
Also, as I understand the retail end of the bike business this is a poor
time to expect much response from shops. However, I will make an appeal to
Hutch's that could result in a response later in the season. I suggest
considering soliciting pledges from other businesses in the same
circumstances.

I hate hitting you all over the head with this on a weekly basis. Kenji

Maybe if each of you forwarded it to your team list or If you are on
another cycling remailer, we might get some people who are not on the OBRA
site. If there were 5000 OBRA members last year, it just seems that 199
contributors is a little low, IMHO

Thanks for the support Ron. Even though you only want to ride on dirt and I
think that dirt is for potatoes and will only race on pavement, we both
agree that the Alpenrose Dairy has been instrumental in supporting all types
of bike racing in Oregon. Donations have slowed down. It is time to give
back. We are about $15,000 short of paying for the first phase of this
project. We still need funds for the second phase of the project which will
be replacement of the apron, planned for next fall when the weather is a bit
drier. Phase 2 is going to be about the same cost as phase 1 and currently
it is not funded. I want to thank all the people that have donated so far.
Please consider donating either through the OBRA web site,
https://obra.org/alpenrose/donate, or by sending to:

I want to make a suggestion regarding full payment of Velodrome repair. I
do not want to presume that racers in Southern, far Eastern or even Central
Oregon have as much direct access to the use of this facility as people in
the Willamette Valley area, but FREE OBRA storage and general use of the
Dairy area for races, clinics as well as velodrome do impact all racers in
the state in that it allows OBRA to keep license costs low.
My suggestion is if the donations for this repair taper to the point where
payment obligation might impact other programs OBRA offers members, that
either a one or two year increase in license fee (except for Juniors) be
considered by the governors / membership.
Yes, I live in Portland, but think all things OBRA are connected to the
overall success of our organization. Races in Klamath Falls, Vancouver,
Ashland, Bend, Corvallis, Hood River, Baker, Blodget, Grant's Pass, Salem,
Government Camp, Sisters, Echo, Eugene, Prineville, Astoria, The Dalles and
now even Ontario make me believe we all can help each area find success at
the community and individual levels.
I hope members can come through with some agreement that can make this
repair a success. If this can be done with statewide support, other needed
projects within our communities (be they support programs or build projects)
can use this momentum to better support access to all levels and disciplines
of racing. As an example. I fully support the idea of a velodrome in the
Bend area if they can get that seed support started. If it looks like a go,
I would be more than happy to help them make it happen. This even though I
will not race Track on it or Alpenrose (no matter how many people tell me to
try it). If it was dirt, I might be interested.
My bottom line is lets support these projects and programs that help OBRA
racers.
Now you can sit in a circle on the floor and discuss or at a keyboard and do
the same........but for God,s sake use the port-a-potty if you gotta go! I
say yes attach an increase in race cost if needed to have enough of
them....to minimize rebel urinators!
thanks for reading.
