Short track SS 29er gearing for PIR?

I rode SS on 26"x2" last season at PIR with a gearing of 36x16. (2.25 Gear ratio and 59.1 gear inches). That suited my riding style-- I tend to mash more than spin (on the road I frequently find myself turning the cranks 75-85rpm) It wasn't so low that I was spinning out early, but I could still accelerate quickly. Handy for those sections that head out into the flat grassy areas.

This summer I'll have a 34 in the front and will likely run a 16 in the back for 55 gear inches. (I switched to a 34t chainring for more flexibility in gearing for trail-riding.)

I figure that you were riding approximately 65 gear inches on your cross bike.

Assuming a 2" tire on your 29er, it looks like a 34x16 would yield a 60.4 gear inch.

34x17= 56.8in
34x15=64.4in.

Good luck!
Brian J.

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like my best bet is to buy a 34 chain
ring since I'll get the best range of gearing options given my current cogs.

34x16 seems a popular choice (which is identical to 32x15 for inquiring
minds).

What are all you cats running? I used 42x18 for most cross races last year
and that felt fine -- for a reference point.
