I volunteered at the Wash. State High School mountain bike race near Washougal today. I think this is the Washington League’s 2nd year so they are still growing this event, but they seemed to have pretty good numbers considering kids travel around the state to get to the races. I think the thing that touched me most was to drive into a venue and see what is a normal sight for some of our Cross and XC races..........A tent city, as well as some folks who camped overnight......a festival environment. All this just for the High School Kids!
I know they are part of the same league as Nor and So Cal league as well as Texas and maybe more....not sure. Ripley and John Wilson were there checking it out and sharing thoughts with folks. I stayed out of their way!
I think we here in Oregon are doing some really great things for our Juniors and High School racers, thus they are experiencing some very neat venues to race, but my hats off to Rip and Wilson for knowing we all can learn as well as share. I believe today was good for both OBRA and their league. These two guys will share with all the other people in OBRA any information or ideas gleaned from their day. Our Juniors are lucky to have such a committed core of adults working to give them races to follow their dreams. Now we just need to get some of their (Wash, Nor / So Cal) Brass to check out one of our events, be it XC or Cross. Our race-scape is pretty special too! Maybe they talked about that.
It was neat to see a number of our Oregon folk over supporting them.
OBRA ...............rocks.
